Do you still have a heater in your dedicated track car?
I am in the process of building a track only car, and was wondering if others on here have kept the heater intact. I was originaly thinking to leave it in for the rain to be able to defog the windshield. The A/C is already removed, and the defogger in my car didnt seem to do much in the one wet session I have done. So what did you do? Ditch the dead weight, or am I crazy to even consider this? Thanks for your help.
Provided it is allowed in your class consider how many races will you benefit from the defogger and how many will you benefit from the reduced weight. However, if you can hit your minimum weight without removing it then I would keep it.
I removed it in my car... for most of the year it is ok..
This last race I had to make a "defroster" out of a boat heater (cage prevents me from installing the oem heater box) so my windows would not fog up.

As far as it being required in IT, does it have to actually turn on and run, or do you just need to leave the core in there?
I reinstalled the heater in my track car just for peace of mind when I run events in cooler weather. I'd rather be out driving when it's cool and humid than parked because the windows fogged up.
In my case I still had the blower and heater core in the car, so there was little added weight.

i left mine in.. for both defogging and heating purposes(I'm a sissy

In IT, all of the parts are supposed to be there but you can bypass and drain the core. I run mine but was really disappointed when it didn't rain like hell this past weekend, so I could have beaten all of the faster cars that don't have real defoggers.

Would the heater help in keeping coolant temps lower? I put my heater on full blast whenever I hotlap.

Exactly why mine is staying in - I lost a turbo charge pipe at one event this summer and the coolant temp sky rocketed before I could figure out what was goign on (with no boost control that little turbo spins REAL fast) throw the heat on full blast and limp it back to the pits - head gaskets still in-tact and head/block mating surfaces still true, thank goodness.

in both my racecars, the heater is intact. and i use it all the time....
1. how much weight does removing it really save? maybe 10lbs?
2. how much more comfortable will you be in 38 degree weather, raining hard, foggy, during an important race? i've been in a bunch of those type races....
3. added comfort of the possibility of additional cooling at your fingertips is always appreciated. for example, my current H1 car always runs in the "safe" zone. even during hot days. except for one race last year; it was at Summit Point; 90+ degree day, and i was absolutely glued to S. Lockwood'r rear bumper for 3 laps. i noticed the temp creeping up into the "hmmm, that looks a little too high" zone; i flipped the heat on and put the fan on high, and within 1 more lap, back to normal. not enough air getting too the rad due to drafting, but the forced air thru the heater core was enough to keep the engine temp in balance.
so, for me, no way i will take out the heater system in any of my racecars....
good luck

Alright, let's test Todd's resolve....
Hey Todd, I'll pay you $100 for the heater from your Civic.
Can the cheapest racer in the history of motorsports rise above this offer?

Matt you gotta do better than that and offer him a set of tires
Or maybe an engine for his busted *** lotus-thing....

RJ, this is Todd we are talking about. The guy who gets off the PA turnpike on the way to Watkins Glen two exits early to avoid paying a $.35 toll, despite the fact that the other way adds 20 minutes to the trip. The guy who races on Pep Boys brake pads because they have a lifetime warranty. The guy who up until last year had never bought a new tire, for any vehicle, in his entire life.
Dropping $100 in front of Todd is like waving a dime bag in the face of a crack addict.

lmao...
lmao...
i happen to have a heater core out of a wreck that i parted out.....
i'll take the $100 by paypal; where would you like me to ship the heater core?
todd
ps when you are towing a trailer, the toll savings on the way to watkins glen on that part of the turnpike is like $1.05!!!!

Nope! It's gotta be the one out of one of your racecars!

Yeah, and at $2.00/gallon, how much extra fuel do you burn? LOL!

ha! no extra fuel; the mileage is the same, approx. its just you take smaller back roads that generally parallel the turnpike after you get off. it takes longer because you can only drive about 40-45 mph instead of 75 mph.
in fact, it might take less gas; as my truck definitely burns more fuel when towing at 75 than when driving at 45!
todd
ps can't wait to go back to the glen this year. didn't drive there at all last year; thats a first for me since 1993

At 45 in third gear, my Jeep lugs so badly when I'm towing that I might not make it at all. If I hold second gear, I'll burn just as much fuel as I would if I was going 75! The extra sleep from getting there early is worth the tolls...

Back on topic....I pulled out the heater core, heater vent box, ac condenser(sp?) and box, and fan and casing to install the roll cage. At the time, I didn't think IT rules required me to put any of it back in. Then I realized that it specifically says the heater core may not be removed, so back in went the core and vent box. As of right now, that is all that went back in of the system, but I'm wondering, per IT rules, it says I can remove the air conditioning system and related components, which would include the condenser in the dash.
Do I have to put back in the blower or at least the casings for the blower and condensor to be compliant to IT rules?
<-----might be adding another thing to my to do list before licensing school this weekend.

Never mind. I put the blower and ducting for the defroster back in the car last night, as it might rain at school on sunday. Set me back a few hours on the project list, but I think I'll be okay.

From what I heard, just leaving it in is sufficient.

I've left the AC in my track car. Works better than a cool suit while sitting in the 'pit out' line at WGI on a hazy, hot, humid July day.
