I don't like the car at all. When it first came out I thought it had potential but I was wrong
Shifts like **** too, unless they fixed that in 04 or 05

I remember a guy on OT having handling problems with his SE-R right out of the box. I don't recall specifically what the issues were.
This latest gen of SE-R has various complaints about quality issues from what I've read on freshalloy.com in the past.

Yaaa.......
I was doing an HPDE at limerock (avd group)( a while back) and there was this guy who had an older sentra and I could not get around him at all, even in the straights! that little POS had R comps and looked damm stock.
Don't sleep on them, I have seen others moving pretty good.
But I still hate them.

Yeah I wouldn't buy one. Terrible shifter, decent handling but not super impressive, and engine gets off the line quickly but runs out of breath on the top end. If its any indication Realtime had to do some serious modification to the rear suspension to get it to handle okay for World Challenge Touring and even then they had limited success with the car.
I autoxed a Spec V a couple of time a year or so ago. It was a nice enough car and better than most cars on the road in a lot of ways - but when pushed it really suffered. Like others have said the gearbox is terrible and the setering was too light and very non-communicative. The car felt very heavy and didn't want to turn in at any speed. The car had very little grip - much less than I would have expected for the tires and suspension on the car. It was also very difficult to feel the limits of the car - it does not let you know what is happening underneath you. Becasue of this the Spec V will come around on you and you will never have seen it coming and you will ask yourself what happened.
The biggest problem was that damn rear beam or whatever it was. I'm not sure if they have gone to a different format for the rear suspension - but if they still have that beam, run away.
Some of the traits of the car can be overcome by modifications and tuning - but I believe you are still working off a flawed platform.

All of the newer Sentras (Spec V included) use the crappy rear twist beam suspension - garbage...
The older (90 - 93?) Se-R's are fun little cars on the other hand - much more nimble and fun-to-drive than the newer version.

The SE-R SpecV is an unbelievable bargain. MSRP is something like $19,000, but you can get them for a LOT less than that in the real world. I was shopping for a 350Z in the fall of 03, and while at the Nissan dealer, I found that I could get a brand new SE-R SpecV for under $14,000 with all the rebates Nissan had on it at that time plus a little half-hearted haggling.

The beam is only really a problem because it means the rear toe setting is non-adjustable. From the factory the beam is bent to give lots of rear toe-in. This alignment makes the car "fail-safe" in emergency handling situations, but it also makes very difficult to rotate and not very fun to drive. The fix is simply to get the beam bent straigh to 0 rear toe. This is something you can do at home in your garage, and even some alignment shops will do it. The car really comes alive handling-wise after that.

The 91-94s are the original Sentra SE-Rs. I have a 1992 as a beater/daily driver. VERY fun car to drive. Surprisingly fast, nimble, and reasonably light weight. The only problem is finding one that has not rusted out yet.

actually, toe is adjustable on them with different eccentric shims. they sandwich inbetween the rear hub and the lower arm. works decent, but still doesn't make up for the lack of a true independent suspension.

when you consider price and performance only, it's a pretty darn good buy for a new car. i bet they are out there for less than 10grand also. i'm not saying it's the greatest car in the world, but for the money, it's not bad at all.
