Mid-Ohio '04 Video and Event Sponsor
Andy's thread on the Mid-Ohio '04/East Meets West event was a treat to read this morning. A great reminder of a one of last year's better racing memories, for many.
It also resurrected a beef that's been with me ever since: the last minute video coverage (good) and the “required” G-Sport windscreen banners forced upon drivers/teams at the eleventh hour (bad). Since Andy's thread was very up beat and positive, I started a new one for this rant so as not to crap on the good karma in his.
From my view, it happened like this: G-Sport stepped up to pay for the “TV” coverage, which was to be taped by the Effect/Team Toilet guys during one of the two days of racing. As part of the deal, each car was given a G-Sport windscreen banner to run for the event. The problem was many of the cars already had sponsorship graphics at the top of the windscreen and were told that they had to run the new banner or they would NOT BE ALLOWED TO COMPETE. Faced with this last minute Draconian edict, the dangling carrot of being on SPEED or ESPN and the pressure to be a team player and “do what’s good for the series” everyone caved in. They ran the banners and raced.
Since then, there has been no TV coverage, no DVDs for fans or even competitors at the event and (I'm guessing here) no thanks nor apology from those at G-Sport or those organizers who forced this steaming plate of well-wished crap upon the competitors at the event.
Looking at the GCR and HC rules that were in effect at last years race, there was nothing to force anyone to run the new graphics to be ALLOWED TO COMPETE.
GCR 18.1.1-2 (on Car Numbers and Advertisements And Graphics, respectively) talk only about the required car number guidelines and the required NASA stickers and placement. In reference to all other graphics, the section only states “Advertising and graphics may be used on vehicles provided they are in good taste and do not interfere with required identification marks or conflict with any series’ sponsor.” Now turning to section 15.0 of the HC National Rules, we read 15.0a: “Certain graphics are required on Honda Challenge racecars. Information on these materials is available at the Honda Challenge website, http://www.honda-challenge.com, or by emailing the Honda Challenge Directors at info@honda-challenge.com”
No racer I spoke to had seen anything on the web site nor received any notice of the “required graphics” prior to leaving for the event. No one had a chance to make other other vinyl to satisfy prior commitments to existing sponsors, and no one was given the option to run without the “required graphics” even if it meant they might be excluded from the video coverage.
Now its over, and EVERYONE looks stupid. Racers who covered their existing sponsors’ graphics look bad, NASA who did a last minute deal with the devil looks bad, the last minute sponsor (who's name is now attached to pissed off sponsors, racers and NO video or TV coverage) looks bad, and the video contractor Effect looks bad for just doing what they were paid for.
I write this rant, because this whole thing stinks, was done too late and was handled poorly. It was BAD for the series, BAD for the sponsors and BAD the racers. It should never happen like this again.

I agree completely with you John. I understand that the intentions were good, and if all had gone to plan, would have been good for the series. But as it is, I have not seen any video except personal in car cams. What ever happened to the coverage?
Something like this in the future will probably be handled with a bit more warning and planning!

As far as I know, Team Toilet has been cut in half, though I don't know what effect this would have on the video. I know the Mike Pendola (white S2000) has moved out west, and Steve Schram (white H1 EG HB) has been trying to sell his car for a while. This only leaves Ed Sackley (white H2 ITR that got wadded up on Sunday at the National) and Wai (H2 JDM ITR).
Not sure if Effect Industries is still working on the video or not, but I do know that Jon Marhefka (2004 MWHC Series Director) had a pretty good tie in with the whole G-Sport deal, though no one has heard a word from him since those great days in August. Word on the street is that he wadded up his H4 CRX late in the year at Nelson Ledges in a SCCA Regional and will be racing a Spec Miata this year.
Long story short, I wouldn't hold your breath hoping to see a video. Just my .02 worth.

I remember talking to one of the Johns/Jons (who does both SCCA and NASA races) at the Honda pavilion and he was talking about how GSport didn't come in as a focused sponsor and that they had no clearcut direction on what they wanted or how to promote themselves.

Just to clear something up, and not to **** anyone off anymore than they already are on this subject, the OH/IN Region of NASA, and all of NASA Pro Racing for that matter, had nothing to do with entire G-Sport/Effect deal.
Just so everyone knows, the MWHC was ran by co-directors in 2004: Jon Marhefka, who was the series director, and Chris Stiffler, who was the technical director. Chris was able to secure sponsorship for the National HC event from Hawk Brakes and Hoosier Tires, and made it known to all the competitors well in advance. I was in the same garage as Chris all weekend, and he was as shocked as everyone else when the G-Sport window banner "requirement" was announced at the track on Friday. Why would he have spent over $100 in window decals for his four (4) team cars for that particular event if he had known they were going to be covered up?
Jon announced the G-Sport/Effect deal the week of the National event, but didn't bother to disclose the details about the window banners until all the competitors arrived at the track.
Very unprofessional, and if all of the competitor's had known ahead of time that things would be handled in this manner, most would have probably chosen to not have ran the window banners and wouldn't have cared that they were "losing a chance" at getting the race on TV.
Hopefully this has shed some light on a few of the unknowns, and no one will hold any ill feelings against the OH/IN Region of NASA. They had nothing to do with any of it, they were simply the sanctioning body that was conducting a race weekend.
I, as 2005 (and possibly beyond) MWHC Series Director, will not let this kind of thing happen again so as not to leave such a foul taste in the mouths of my fellow racers. Please feel free to IM me if anyone has any other questions.

Thanks for the vote of confidence, as well as all the help you have given to the Honda Challenge series as a whole. Hopefully we can start getting a 2006 National Honda Challenge event in the works later on this year and promote it properly, the way it should have been done.
With the SCCA Runoffs moving to Heartland Park in '06, that opens up a spectator event weekend at Mid-Ohio. Sure would be great to get Honda Challenge, and all of NASA's racing series, on the bill again for a great weekend of racing. We can only hope!

John and everyone else !
I too was extremely disappointed with the organization of the event and the things that were promised.
I have to wonder who really benefitted from the G Sport sponsorship, cause' it certainly wasn't any of us. There was no TV coverage at all after the event and we didn't even get a home made CD/DVD of the event despite promises of such. Trophys and contingency awards never came through either. I emailed Jon and Lawrence about a dozen times about my trophy but it never got mailed out. I gave up.
And the sponorship issue was just plain wrong. As most know I had "TheRaceSite.com" banner on my windshield for the entire 04 season. I negotiated some money of the price of the car in return for running their windshield banner. To make matters worse, Mid Ohio is their home track and they were going to send a photographer out to the race to cover our three cars (Zimmerman and Carpenter).
But all this is inconsequential and irrelevant in regards to the huge sacrifice the WCHC folks made to take and entire week off from work, families and other responsibilities to trek 2000 miles across the country to meet us for a race weekend. I must have appologized to Andy a dozen times about the lack of track time and organization we received.
The combined practice and qualifying session was a joke and neither race went as long as promised. We all got shortchanged but for most of us it was a lost day at work and a 10 hour tow. For the WCHC guys it was an entire week and I am sure at a minimum a $1000 + or more.
I know Chris Stiffler and Sam Meyers both felt real bad as well and were angry. Chris even risked his neck on hondatech to personally apologize and voice his displeasure. The result was that he was relieved of his HC duties with the MWHC region.
In closing, it wasn't what we hoped it would be, but nonetheless it was good hard fought and clean racing and a lot of fun from both the ECHC side and the WCHC side.
My hats go off to all the WCHC people (racers, crew, magazine staff, and fans) who came out. I can't think of a more passionate group of hard core racers than these guys

Jon P. Kofod

I'd love to get Chris back into a car, but it's up to him to get the car, not me. He can make it happen if he really wants to, so time will tell.
Jon Kofod, Sam Meyers, and everyone,
Thanks for your added insights and explanations. Its nice to get some clarity on the situation and reassuring to know there are others as upset about it as I was. No doubt we can all do a better job of insuring it doesn't happen like this again.
My feeling is that amateur racing can be a training ground for more than just driving, race-craft, and car development. It is also a place where many are learning to work with sponsors, media and race organizations to better promote themselves AND the series' and organizations in which they compete. Just like our on-track experiences, mistakes will be made, lessons will be learned, and rarely will things go exactly the way we plan. But the well meaning and good intentioned racer will be thinking of the bigger picture in equal measure with his own goals and desires.
Honda Challenge is growing into one of the hottest forums of amateur racing, nation wide. It's good to see others who care stepping into help ease the pains of that growth and to keep us moving forward into an even better future.

The video is done. It has been done since probably November. It is also the property of G-Sport. Last I heard about their intentions, there wasn't anything to hear yet.
I will send Mike in here to update.

Hey guys, Im in a hurry so I only read like 3 lines, but the G-Sport Video was delivered in November of 2004. It is now in G Sports Hands.. As far as I know myself and a few others are the only ones that have seen it.. I gotta run, I'll post more later!!

So it looks like we just need to let G Sport know that we want to see it. Anybody got contact info?
My feeling is that when people contact them they should try to be as tactful as possible. I heard they spent a good deal of money having it made and at this point they haven't gotten anything back for it. They may not feel like they really owe us anything. A hard line may make them regret supporting us. Maybe letting them know how much you want to see it and that you appreciate their support would be the way to go.

Sorry to hear that. Both the crash and the switch to the Pinata. Jon seemed like a really cool ****. Wish him the best.

Don't worry Andy, Jon isnt switching over to the dark side nor did he roll the car into a ball at Nelson at the end of the season. We was in the office today and the only good news is he sold his other ITA civic that he had.
Sorry folks but all this seems like utter bullsh*t to me. We were the ones who had to cover up our sponsor windshield banners so G-Sport could promote their company. We were the ones who ran their banners and raced for two days. What I want to know is who got the rumored 10K, cause we didn't get one benefit out of this entire deal.
You'd think with 10K floating around in someone's pocket we could at least have gotten a cheesy $2 trophy mailed out and a DVD.
At a minimum we are going to get a DVD out of this if I have anything to say about it. The video footage we turned over was our property...plain and simple. I didn't sign anything with G-Sport or Jon M. that transfered my property to G-Sport for their exclusive use.
Did anyone else sign such papers ?
Regards,
Jon
