US ITR LSD into US GSR trans... Whats the correct shim size?
I searched and saw people confused about ring gears or some ****. Il use the GSR ring gear on the ITR LSD and i know that fits no problem. I remember reading a long time ago (cant find thread) that the ITR LSD needs to be shimmed ever so slightly to allow for proper clearances... Anyone know the part #'s? where the shims go? Are they even needed? I also remember someone had to shave some of the internal webbing on the trans housing, which is no problem. Just unsure about the shimming issue that i read about a while ago. thanks

You always check the thrust clearance of the differential. The shim thickness you end up using depends on the clearance b/w the differential bearings and the casing.
See the service manual for the listing of shim thicknesses. If you use the enclosed ball bearings, then you only need one 80mm diameter shim on the gear-side of the transmission casing. The other kind of differential bearings, tapered roller bearings, require a 79.5mm shim and you check the preload with a wrench and special adapter tool.
See my ITR LSD and JDM ITR FD install post in the Integra forum.

well, turns out i have 90% of a US ITR trans. The 3rd gear and syncro is FUBAR and the cases are split already. The LSD has the inclosed style bearings, if i remember correctly for some reason, i think the GSR uses the tapered needle bearings. not 100% sure on that... Ought to be fun
The shim goes in between the bearing and LSD? or between the bearing and case?
-on the gear side as stated before. thanks

The shim goes between the bearing and transmission case. The enclosed ball bearings are 98+ (or thereabouts) GSR/ITR items. Prior to that, needle bearings were used.
Trimming the case refers to installing the GSR/ITR diff into a YS1 cable case.
Obtain the Helm Inc. manual and read the transmission section. It lists the proper measuring procedure for selecting shims.

I just read through IN VTEC's LSD install. Looks good, only pisser is the pics didnt load on how to check for the proper clearances. Il prolly just slop it together with an "average" sized shim. As in, ghetto. How crucial is it for that thing to be .002 within proper clearnaces and whatnot? Obviously if it was smacking around in there, thats bad, but the range of clearance he got was very tight.
I dunno, im gonna head in the garage right now and play Dr Satan with my trannies.
This ought to be a fun one.

this **** is easy, il get the correct shim too.
I was just playing around with the broken R trans, just like my dirtbike trans for the most part. To think i spent $350 for labor for some jagbag to install an ITR LSD into my GSR trans last year pisses me off. This is seriously a 2 hour job. Provided the correct shim is sitting right there next to you, or you own a Acura parts dealership, but ya know what i mean.
Its on like donkey kong!

feeler gauges were at .042 gonna run the .0413 shimmy shim shim. Hopefully the ******* still shifts fine when i put it back together.
I used the shim that was in the case originally, and came away with zero clearance. No problems since. I believe the shims account more for differences in case machining, not so much for differences in diff carrier machining.
the shim in the junk trans was a .054 Probably too big for my gsr trans. I installed a .0411 and the .004 feeler gauge has some slight drag on it when i slide it through, so thats good enough for me. See how she drives today/tomorow...
