best midrange cam for b16 w/ stock valvetrain
First off, I've done a lot of searching, however I would like a poll to see which ones u guys would recomend. All u have to do is vote on the poll, but please comment if u have more to add.
So my friend has a b16 w/ exhaust, intake, header, & high flow cat. Thats it. All he wants is some mild cams & then he says he's done. I tried talking him into doing the valvetrain but he doesnt want to spend that much at least for a while.
So my question is which cams would be best & still be somewhat ok on the stock valvetrain. BTW, it's only street driven so midrange is prefered slightly over top end.
1. CTR/ITR
2. Skunk2 Stage 1
3. Blox Type A
4. BC3+ (not sure if these can use the stock valvetrain, can they?)
Any others???? Rockets would be in consideration also except everywhere I look only sells them with the valvetrain which bump up cost a good amount. No cams over ~$650.
-Thanks

The buddy club spec 3+ are the cams to go with! No need to upgrade your stock valvetrain. These cams are perfect for stock bottom end b-series engines. If you're looking for a set, we are currently having a sale. Good luck.

These cams would be out of the question since they are basically an enhanced version of the current Skunk2 stage 2 cams and definitely require a valve train upgrade which he doesn't want.
I would have recommended some Skunk stage 1's except for the fact that I have them in my b16a2 now and love them but unless you extend out the rev limiter to at least 8500 rpm and do some fuel tuning with a VAFC, you won't get full enjoyment out of them. Before I put my Hondata in I was constantly hitting my rev limiter (stock ecu) with those cams because they are still pulling when you hit it. There was also a noticeable dip in power when Vtec engaged which was corrected with some tuning.
Because of these factors I would have to say that ITR/CTR cams would probably give you the easiest drop in and go power with minimal tuning. The Skunks would give you more power but require more tuning.

Thanks guys, keep it coming!
I have s2s1's im my car & i like them, but yes before hondata they did dip right when vtec hit, so that's why i think they might not be best for my friend.
So the bc3+ are ok on the stock valvetrain, cool.
Also, what anyone think of the Blox? From the specs they seem to be about like a s2s1 on the high lob, correct. But whats the secondary lob like, bigger then s2s1, smaller, or about the same? I know the bc3's have a bigger secondary lobe right?

the Bc3's are not cool for stock valvetrain, for a little bit maybe but not for long, I don't think people realise how agressive thee cams are they will wear out ur valvetrain fast and something will break...u'd be a little safer with type -r valve train but i wouldn't trust that for long. if ur gonna spend the money for that big a cam its common sense to do ur valvetrain too

You took the word right out of my mouth

yea, that's why i asked. they do seem pretty agressive to me so i didn't think they'd be too good on stock valvetrain.
So I'm thinking the three ones it should be between is blox, ctr, & s2s1. What do u think guys?
No more bc3 votes please. If they're going to be very harsh on the stock valvetrain then I'm sure my friend wont want them. So let vote between blox, ctr, s2s1.
Thanks

i belive the Itr cams are more agressive than the ctr u may want them instead......, I think its the itr exhaust cam is the same as a gsr , the only one that is different is the intake , or it may be the other way around, i know on of them is the same as a gsr cam . So all u would have to do is get one gsr cam and but the other itr cam for somewhere liek jdmhondaparts.com

you're better off with skunk2 stage 1's. bc 3+ are too aggressive for a b16 stock valvetrain. type r valvetrain with bc3+ at the least, but even that is not safe

honda r cams own midrange land...at least compared to ^

the r cams just own up to 7k

I think this just reinforces the fact that the ITR/CTR cams would be the best selection in his case because all the other cams that are being considered will behave similar to the way my Skunk stage 1 cams did when I first put them in, before I went to the Hondata (as explaind in my above post). The ITR/CTR cams appear to be the only selection that will pretty much allow him to drop them in and go without much if any tuning required.
yea, my recomendation to him was ctr's, because of the simple fact that they just drop in & make power without really any tuning needed (of course tuning doesn't hurt though).
But he asked if there were anymore that would make a little more power. So that' why i was thinking s2s1's or blox A. However, i had the same experience as u with my s2s1's when they were untuned- they had a dip in power when vtec hit & kept pulling hard but the stock revlimiter ruined the fun.

ive been running the bc3+ cams with constant 8500 rpm shifts on stock jdm gsr valvetrain for 20,000 miles. STOCK VALVETRAIN will hold up just fine with these cams.
