ZC LSD cable trans... Will I need new axles??
Hey guys I'm planning on buying a ZC SOHC tranny with LSD for my 91 Si but I was wondering if I will need new axles or not? Also this should bolt up to my d15b correct???
Don't buy anything without doing some intensive research first. It will save you time, money, and headaches. Here's why:
If it's the same transmission as they used on the DOHC ZC, then YES, you will need new axles - or at least ONE new axle. And you'll need an intermediate shaft as well, or a solution to get around it.
What D15B are you bolting it to? So far as I know, the US-model D15B's (D15B6 HF, D15B2 DX) engines don't have the threaded holes for the intermediate shaft's outer mount bracket, so there's no place to bolt it to the engine block. The US D16A6 *does* have the threaded holes, so a ZC tranny with int-shaft is a direct bolt-on for that engine.
A JDM D15B VTEC may well have those mounting points on the back of the block. They're underneath the alternator and oil filter, on the back of the block. There are three holes, laid out like an "L" laid on its back (like this: ". :"). If your D15B has those mount holes, then you're almost home - the tranny and intermediate shaft should bolt right up.
Axles: For the passenger (right) side, I *think* you can use the standard DX/Si right axle. I could be wrong on that; get verification from someone who's running your same setup before buying anything.
For the left side, though, you're using an intermediate shaft now (it helps cut down on torque steer by making both axles the same length), so you need to use a different axle. I believe the '90-'93 Integra non-ABS driver's side axle is the preferred one, but if memory serves, you need to remove a little dust-shield from the inner side of the left-side wheel hub to get it to fit exactly right.
I've *heard* (again, get verification from someone who's using it) that there is an Accord left-side axles that will fit the ZC differential AND the CRX wheel hub, which means you can do away with the intermediate shaft. IF it works.
As you see, there are some questions you need to find answers to. Some of the answers will have to come from you (finding out whether your engine block has the proper places to mount an intermediate shaft), and some can no doubt be answered by the tranny gurus here and at d-series.org (look for "transzex" over there, and he should be able to answer all your questions).
Sorry I can't offer more help. Hey, if it was EASY, everyone would do it.

My old setup was the jdm cable lsd tranny on a JDM SOHC 1.6 vtec ZC
The axles I used were 90-91 teg left and right and the SOHC intermidiate shaft which was diff then the dohc inter shaft
As Kwicko said check first if you have the holes....then check if they are threaded.

Just take the 60fwy to Pyrite in Riverside. Get off and head up the hill to the Pick-a-Part. In the first lot, to the right is a black primered snatchback. It has a DOHCZC and a real ZC trans. Not sure if it was LSD or not, but I doubt it. It has the axels and int. shaft. They want $100 for the trans, 10 for core charge, and some taxes. About $125 to take it home. Then rebuild it, and buy a quality LSD such as a Quife. Just my opinion, - Darrell
BTW - If you go, pull me a TPS Sensor and I'll meet you there and give ya $10 cash for it.

Thanks for the info Kwicko
I will have to look into this a lot more. I was thinking of just buying an aftermarket LSD and putting it in my SI trans but the ZC SEEMED a lot simpler. Anyhow I would be bolting it to my JDM d15 SOHC Vtec motor. Maybe I'll just look into an aftermarket unit. I am kinda nervous about the condition that the ZC trans could be in and my current tranny has no grinds and shifts smoothly. But thanks for the info.
Anyone have a recommendation for a good aftermarket LSD??
