Default Clutch Noise

Hi guys, my clutch is squeaking every now and then, although I can't remember off hand whether it is being depressed or released when it happens. I did a search and read:

"squeaky clutch pedal, or clutch throwout bearing is dieing (common)"

What is this clutch throwout bearing? Is it expensive to get this issue fixed?

I am worried if I take the car to Firestone they will tell me: "Yep ... transmission is toast, but luckily for you we can keep your car for a week and replace it for only $5000.00".

I have the same problem except mine is a 98 LS with 61k miles. The cluthc noise actually occured much earlier, like around 56k if I remember right. The dealer said it was the throwout bearing and it will be expensive to replace......very expensive to replace. I think they quoted me either $400 or $900...can't remember. Anyway, they said that included replacing the entire clutch assembly since they would have to take that apart in order to get to the throwout bearing.

That is too much $$$ ... I think I would just get an Exedy Clutch and have JoTech install it for that much.

What will happen if I do nothing and just keep driving it like this?

Dude...if you can do mechanical work, follow the tutorial on http://www.c-speedracing.com and do the clutch job yourself. It took me about 10 hours my first time, but now I estimate more like 3. If you're comfortable digging deep into the workings of your car, try it.

I don't know about that, last time I set about to do my own work I ended up stripping the timing belt tensioner bolt ... not fun.

Needless to say from now on I am leaving things up to the pros.

Even if it does cost a bit more then doing it myself I won't end up with $1500.00 of debt on a card that charges a 20% APR. I don't know what made me think installing ITR cams myself was going to be a good idea ...

I have a lot of respect for people that can do this kind of stuff themselves, but it ain't for me. I am sticking to changing oil, and maybe brake pads.
