posted last night....no luck in responses
well i posted last night but didnt get a real answer on what i was asking
my gsr has 43,xxx miles on it....about two nights ago i started noticing a whirling/whining noise from right beneath the shifter area....as i pull up on the shift boot it gets louder.....its noticeable in all gears....mainly above 4000 rpm.
in neutral i hear it very faintly, but when i engage the clutch it goes away...but when i dissengage the clutch, just about as soon as im fully releasing pressure off of the pedal i hear it again. in neutral...if i "shimmy" the shifter to the left and hold it...i get somewhat of the same noise.
could it possibly be the throw-out bearing? im not so uppity on transmissions etc...my knowledgable point is the motor...but im learning more and more about all mechanical functions throughout the whole car.
i just got my clutch/flywheel/and pressure plate changed...via warranty about 4 months ago....is it possible to change all of this without draining the transmission fluid? if it is...maybe i just need a trans fluid change....i honestly dont know
if someone knowledgable could help me or point me in the right direction..please help out a fellow member

Try this... idle in neutral, clutch engaged (that means NOT pressing the pedal down). Does it make the noise?
Press the pedal down to disengage the clutch quickly. Does the noise go away? Instantly or does it take a second to 'coast to a stop'?
Drive along then disengage the clutch & coast (in gear). Does the noise go away or not?
This stuff will help decide between a throw-out bearing vs. a tranny shaft bearing. Either way you take the tranny out, but the T-O bearing is easier.

when im in neutral...coasting....the noise is gone....its only in gear....im leaning towards the throw out bearing...im happy i caught this know as opposed to in amonth when the turbos on...maybe itll be a prime time to slap on a heavy duty clutch....if it stops in neutral..when coasting....would you say its definently the throw out bearing?
I had this same problem with my 91 accord. I couldnt figure out what it was and thought it was the clutch and throw out bearing but after taking the tranny out they all looked new. I still replaced them and put it all back together only to still have the noise then i took off the drain plug on the tranny to have plastic pieces comming out.. busted alot of little plastic gears inside. Put new tranny in and noise was gone.

How about coasting in gear with clutch disengaged?
How about suddenly disengaging the clutch with the car stopped, tranny in neutral?
I tried to give you some very specific things to test. There's a reason for checking exactly like I described...

sorry bro i responded on my way out the door to work...hopefully this will be more useful

How about coasting in gear with clutch disengaged? yep...while coasting in gear or in neutral still hearing it...not as loud...but still noticeable
How about suddenly disengaging the clutch with the car stopped, tranny in neutral?
nope...while im stopped i hear nothing, either in netural with the clutch engaged or in gear with the clutch disengaged except when i "shimmy" the shifter from left to right, if i hold it to either the left or right i hear somehwat of the same noise
[/QUOTE]
pretty much if the car is not moving...even on a slow steady rev to about 3500...i hear nothing....but when the shifter is moved to the left or right of neutral....i hear the same kind of whining/whirling
anytime the car is moving now i hear it...if im in gear i hear it...if im in gear with the clutch disengaged i hear it....if im in neutral coasting i hear it...
i just need a ballpark on what could possibly be going wrong...the car is going in for some service a week from today..and im going to be away for a few days so the car will pretty much sit 3/5 days next week...i do have the acura-certified warranty so hopefully ill be covered...i dont beat on the car....but i do utilize its performance.....sorry again for the unhelpful post this morning...hopefully this will help you out more.....
thanks jimblake

Really sounds like it's tranny, rather than throwout bearing. It'll be difficult since you can't make the noise with the hood up & someone sticking their head in listening.
All the T-O bearing sees is rpm & the load from the clutch pedal. It has no way of 'knowing' whether the car is moving down the road. The T-O bearing can't tell the difference between 3000rpm in neutral vs. 3000rpm in 5th @WOT. Since moving DOES matter, it's somewhere else.
Maybe I should have boiled down the checks like this...
Noise when moving, clutch engaged or disengaged makes no difference, right?
No noise when stopped, regardless of clutch, right?
If it was 100% exactly like this, I'd be certain it's not the T-O bearing.
The confusing part is how you can hear the noise when stopped, by moving the shift lever to the side. But maybe this is just normal engine noise being transmitted thru the linkage when you're pushing on it??
Now for more...
What about the character of the noise? Try driving in different gears.
Same rpm, different road speed; is the noise same or different? If it's the same, then it sounds like input shaft bearings in the tranny.
Same road speed, different rpm; is the noise same or different? If it's the same, it could be output shaft bearings, final drive, or (if you're lucky) wheel bearings or dragging brakes.

i got the car like 6 months ago....i dont beat on the car like i said.....this just sucks
