Break in period for new rods and pistons?

Default Break in period for new rods and pistons?

hey guys just wanted to get an idea of a good break in period after putting in new rods and pistons in my motor. Some people are telling me to take it easy for 1,000 miles, others are telling me 200. What do you guys think?

Also, another disputed topic that ive delt with with different people is compression ratio and tuning. I had stock internals and ive put JE 9:1 pistons in, with that drop from factory to 9:1, how badly is it going to affect my car and will it cause any damage running on it like this? I would figure it would just cause it to run a little richer, but a few people have told me not to even go into boost until i get it tuned b/c of the compression drop, and then others have said it'll run fine and theres nothing to worry about. Input anybody? thanks

I did a break in of 600 miles. The new pistons won't mess anything up just b/c of lower comp. If I were in your shoes, I would get your management set up and put the turbo on and then get it tuned. As a matter of fact I have been in your shoes and that is what I did hehe

ok well from this article as well as another one from mototune, ive come to the conclusion that its fine to run it hard during the break in period (either by dyno tuning or just running around on the streets). Im running slightly rich tho...hopefully this wont cause any damage, but i guess its fine for me to get dyno tuned anytime now. Agreed?

running to rich during your break in period isnt a very good idea.

you want to have a good air/fuel ratio at all times for the rings to seat correctly......and beating the snot out of it when its still fresh and new wont help either unless you plan to tear it down and rebuild it more often like the drag car guys do.

take it easy for the fist 1000 miles and you wont have any problems. you can follow this break-in. it works really well. scroll down at the bottom of the spec sheet: http://www.theoldone.com/artic....html

yeah thats the one i read from mototune, makes much more sense to put the engine under various loads to seat the rings.

I use to race motocross and I rebuilt and broke in my bike several times. Dont bitch the fresh break-in because its how you break it in which results in how its going to run in the future. Prooven fact by me and others.

If you dont run it hard the cylinder walls wont expand to there max allowing the rings to seal properly. Dont beat the **** out of it, just run it like you normal would on a weekend, oops... beating the **** out of it. Dont worry, if something is going to break, it'll break within the first 2 minutes of initial startup, not because you were running it hard.

i hear ya man.

On another note.... When i get it tuned, im considering a tune for 14 or 15 lbs... Do you think this would be safe with JE 9:1 pistons and eagle rods? how long do you think the motor would hold up to that with a good conservative tune? stock sleeves, stock heads, stock crank.... im not sure what psi i should get the high boost setting tuned for, i would like to find a boost setting thats decently safe (not runned @ that setting all the time, low boost @ 9lbs for daily driving) yet something that would put down some kick *** #'s. Anyone know of a happy median somewhere in between crazy power and a safe motor?

There are plenty of break-in threads on here!!! Look up Earl's write up... I went by Earl's write up and my fresh built motor was as healthy as it could be!!!
