Miata Turbo/Supercharger Question
A friend of mine just picked up a 91 Miata, which I believe is the 1.6 liter. After going from a S2000 to a Miata he is obviously a little down on power and wants to go with a supercharger.
Does anyone have any recommendations on either a turbo or supercharger for this car to put down around 200 whp?
Also, how many of you are autoxing a Turbo or Supercharged Miata? I know there was at least one national competitor running a supercharged miata in SM2.
TIA.

What is the car going to be used for mainly? Is this just a street car to fart around town in or a car that will see the track?
Contact gary at trackdog racing, he's a great person to deal with. Go check out the videos and call him if you have any questions.

The car is daily driven and will autox'd probably once a month. So, the power is more for the street.
I checked out the flyinmiata site. Although they are reputable, their packages are on the expensive side. Are there any other reputable companies that have put together nice package for slightly less than $3K - other than Jackson?

flyin miata is the most popular for turbo setups, and jackson racing for superchargers.
yes, a 91 is the 1.6L. what do you need 200hp in a miata for?

I'd go with the GReddy kit for the 90-93 miata. It can be had for right around $1000 and is easily upgradable.

Do any of you find $3500 too much for a turbo kit? My upgraded turbo/injectors/ecu tune/intercooler on my sr20det was certainly less than that.
I guess if he doesn't want to piece things together, he will have to lay down the cash for a kit. Anyone know who is running the National SM2 miata?

The street mod forum on sccaforums.com has a current thread on dynos from sm and sm2 cars, including a miata or two. As far as cost, consider the upgrades to your sr20det were for a motor already set up from the factory for a turbo versus one designed to be na. Lots more parts need to be upgraded or changed outright to make a reliable system. Flyin miata has a very good rep and looks to make very complete products. They are currently showing some stuff using a much more efficient supercharger than the one Jackson uses but I don't know if they have set it up for the older 1.6.

Thanks for the info, I'll check the sccaforum out. As far as the sr20, you may be right. Although, I could probably piece something together for him a-lot cheaper. Of course, my main concern would be the tune.
I'll check the classifieds out as well.

greddy makes an inexpensive turbo kit for the 1st gen miata's. last time i looked it was under 1500 bux. didn't notice that the greddy was already talked about.

Why would you put a $2000+ turbo kit on a $2000 car? I could see it if he was competing. But for the street, that just seems like a waste.

Because its better than buying a slower $4,000 car?
Then again... why would someone spend $15k building and racing a $500 shitbox rx7....

I only spent $14,999.
Actually, my $15,000 figure was the total cost to get started (car, prep work, driver's gear, SCCA schools, etc).

I see you're in central Florida. There's a guy who autocrosses a supercharged Miata pretty regularly down in Fort Myers. Come down to an event, and I'm sure he won't mind talking to you about it. Here's the schedule: http://www.gulfcoastautocrosse...INDEX. In fact, I believe that's him at the top of that page.

If it's the same SM2 Miata that I'm thinking of, it's up in Minnesota now running in the same region as Neal Tovsen and his Street Mod SC Scirocco...
That Miata was hella fast at a local level and did fairly well Nationally but was a couple of seconds out of first if I recall correctly.
Christian, who'd suggest Turbo for a street car and SC for an autoX car

Xian,
The car was autox regularly in the central florida region, but only on practice days. It was white with a supercharger. The driver's name was Bob Palmblad (sp?). That car was fast as ****!
Xian, are you saying that I should dump my turbo for a supercharger?

Yep. That's the one
fast as **** and still had problems putting down the power even with 245/45 16's
He used to run it in Bucc region also... there's another guy here locally that has a red turbo Miata putting down something like 270 to the wheels. I'll probably see him at the next autoX if you want me to get you his contact info.
Definitely dump that POS turbo engine of yours... maybe a SC KA instead?
Christian
PS
I sold my Hype Arrrr this past weekend to some local guy. Hope he treats it well
