Default Paint

Keep in mind, this is for a race car and it really only needs to look good from about 20 feet.

I'm thinking about painting a portion of my hood and possibly adding some different color to the sides of the car or something. The car is currently painted. Do I need to sand and prime before adding the new color, or can I just knock the paint down a little bit with light sanding and just spray the new color over the current color? Is clear coat required?

Thanks.

Sorry this isn't an answer but depending on how complicated the design is have you just considered using vinyl?

One of these colors is not like the others...

A sneak preview of my car Gotta finish it before Sunday.

You are looking at the rear quarter panel. That's the tail light in the lower right corner.

To keep this on topic. When I sent my car to the paint shop it was cost and time effective to do some elements of the design in vinyl.

I would go for vinyl, but here are some answers to your questions.

1st you -can- use the current paint as a background. Sand it down with a dry 320 grit sandpaper for a normal job, or go as low as a 600 grit wet sandpaper for a softer and cleaner surface; depending on how much effort you want to put into it. BTW, I did mine @ 320 and it came out alright (following pic).

As for the paint, I do suggest that you use a base coat + a clear coat. 3 coats of base, 3 coats of clear.

Single stage "polyuréthane" (french sp!) paint tends to chip and look much cheaper; for almost the same price as a dual stage paint.

Will you be using a paint gun to do this ? If so, make sure you have something else then a 10$ one. Paint gun quality and fonctionnality/tunability really does matter. I am not saying that you -need- a 500$ gun, but just dont get the cheapest

Good luck

forgot the pics

The integra was sanded with a 600 grit wet sandpaper, while mine (hatch) was done with a dry 320. (there is not much of a difference IRL...the integra just look a little bit shinier)

Cool, thank you. I'll check around for vinyl, but I'd like to paint something myself. We'll see what happens, but thanks for your input.

IF your not going to do properly prep you car for paint, then just vinyl it. If you want to do it correctly you might as well start over, and repaint the hood. In the end it will just come out better and probably be easier espcially if you make mistakes such as over spraying

Jonh,

Check out Innovations for vinyl. They are just around the corner from you and he is way cheap on pricing. Just never finishes anything on time.

By the way, Steve used to be a painter by trade.

Hey John,

If your design is multi colored, use vinyl.

You can paint it. Remember, it is a Race car. You have to replace the damage and redo the graphics everytime to get wrecked. That is why single stage is better than base/clear. You have to redo the whole paint, harder to touch up.

Wet sand, prep with was and grease remover, use the appropiate tape and spray. If you have a vinyl design, convert to a EPS format and e-mail it to me. I have a vinyl plotter here at the shop.

I have lots of experience painting and touching up paint jobs on the Stock cars I drove and maintained. Paint does look better, but it is more work.

Exactaly. I don't want anything crazy, but I'm not sure how to transfer my idea to vinyl. Maybe just buy a sheet big enough and try to draw on it or make paper templates first then transfer it. I'll figure something out.

How about just having vinyl done of your "Jellybean Racing" character?

A little bit related. I have seen advertisement over a whole car. Is that stuff vinyl?
Is it the same type of vinyl we use on our cars?

Most likely it's just regular vinyl.
