MX or Azenis in STS?
.RJ. I reposted this as you locked it. This is a totally new topic now that the new azenis is comming out and a lot of people are undecided. You cannot use the old azenis as your basis for your decision to what tire to run this year.
You can re-lock it if you really want to but its not the same.
Also with the new contingency that changes peoples minds to.
--------------------Original thread below(topic posted by skierd):
Sorry to beat a dead horse, but I'm stuck between the Azenis or the MX for next season, looking at 205/50/15. The weight difference from what I've seen is upwards of 3pounds a corner between the two (significant I would say on a ~2000pound car) and with Kuhmo's contingency just getting doubled ($300/$200/$100 for Tour events), it makes me look seriously at the kuhmo.
Anyone here ran both? How do they compare grip/time wise?

Hmmm... So you're asking about the new Azenis RT-615, not the old one. (Although you didn't say that, so everyone would assume you were talking about the old one.) And the question you're asking is...

So you're asking whether anyone has run a new tire that's not on the market yet... right?
BTW, when there's a new wrinkle (like a new tire), you can always post your question to an old topic, which re-opens it and lets people review the previous discussion, rather than starting a new one...

Even though nobody has run the tire we can discuss what everybody is thinking about running. Its a tough choice for me right now especially since kumho is going to pay more. Reasons why somebody might choose one to run over the other might be important. People do learn more as they drive the tires so the answers that are in archives are not always correct, even about the old azenis tire.
For me I'm leaning toward the new falken. If its like the old falken it will work well on a 7" wide wheel where I would want 7.5" if I ran the kumhos. I would not worry about weight too much. The new falken is 21 lb so its not as much diffence anymore.
I am also running a stiff spring rate and heard the stiffer sidewall will help that. I am not sure exactly how much of an effect that has though.
If the new falken is like the old one and I assume it will be somewhat. You can use it at full tread competitively where you MUST shave the kumho. I can get more life out of the falkens than I could a kumho.
All these are deciding factors of my choice.

I don't know how many sets of tires you'll be using... but something else to keep in mind is that the current Azenis works better in any condition that's not super-hot and dry, and you don't have to wait for them to come up to temp to start working well. Seems easier to cool a tire down in grid than it is to try and keep it warm. I think the 215 works better for my driving style than the MX, FWIW. Contingency money does look awfully nice though... Then there's also the point that you can USE an Azenis fulltread and it's faster than a fulltread Kumho (which I think are basically total junk after running a set fulltread:cord) the Azenis still gets substantially faster as it gets to low tread.
So the end result is... :iono: yet.

One other thing to consider - you might want to just buy a set of the old Azenis. I think Vulcan still has them in stock. I would probably do this if I had any extra cash.
The new Azeni has some good things about it (supposedly faster, better in rain, doesn't get greasy for track sessions) the old one also has some advantages (known performance, cheaper, heats up good for autox).
Also, good info on the Kumho - I didn't realize you should shave that tire.
The main thing here for me is price I guess....for as much as the new Azenis are rumored to be, I might just get Toyo RA1's (works for me, I do track sessions and street drive, when I do autox it's just for fun so I'm not worried about a particular class).

Well I was referring to the current RT-215 honestly... if Falken can make the 4/30 deadline with the new tire then it becomes an issue. If I were discussing future tires though, I'd have to throw the Hankook H212, Yoko Advans, and the Toyo T1-R in this too.
But really, I wasnt aware that the MX's need to be shaved for performance use... something that dampens their appeal significantly since I dont run 2 sets of summer wheels.

The 4/30 deadline as I remember only applies to R compound, not ST tires. As long as the tire meets the requirements for ST, they can come out when ever.

Street Touring
14.3.C - 13.3.F is not applicable to Street Touring classes.
Stock
13.3.F - Each tire must be sold in at least four rim diameters, with a total of at least six sizes.
However, 13.3.B still applies to ST.
13.3.B - No tire models will be approved for competition during the rest of the year after April 30 of each calendar year.

How do you know that no one has a set yet? STS tire test coming up soon.

Hate to say it but the 4/30 deadline dose apply to ST but not the number of sizes...
And as I read the info on the Azenis I think the sidewalls are going to be much closer to the MX than the old version, thus a 7.5 wheel being better!?!?!?!

The 3rd poster in this thread claims that he is running the new Azenis.

think of the less fortunate in the world... no need to do burnouts when i'll get good use out of that tread

VulcanTires seems to have somewhat of an release date set for each size and prices decided already..

I guess we can count on 205/50/15 by the end of march.
