idling too high cold too low warm
Hello all,
My 93 integra is idling around 1700 when i start it in the morning. After it warms up it idles around 500 and dips a bit lower sometimes. In the morning when it is cold it runs rough and makes sputtering and hissing noises right about where the IACV is located. After the car is warmed up the noises go away and the car idles a bit more like it should, only too low. The only other thing is that the idle speed changes slightly as the temperature of the car fluctuates. It idles around 700 where it should when the temperature gauge is a bit less then half way. Normally my temperature gauge after the car is warm sits at the half way point. I sprayed the IACV with throttle cleaner but this hasn't solved the problem. Any ideas before I go ahead and replcace the IACV?

Before you replace why don't you just take it out the IAC and clean it. Put it back and check what happens. If not you can disconnect it when your car is warm check where your idle is. I believe it should be 600 with it not connected from then you can mess with the idle screw.
edit* readings ownz me. you already cleaned it. did you mess with the idle screw? it dips up and down everytime your at a stop or only sometimes? Do you have white smoke coming out of the exhaust? My friend had the same problem we cleaned it, adjusted the screw and still nothing worked. Turned out his timing was off just a little bit on the cam gears. Timed it again and it ran fine after that no problem. I was suprised it even idle when the timing was off. weird.

OnDaBottle,
Thanks for your help. I haven't messed with the idle screw yet. I don't even know where it is located. Maybe adjusting the screw would take car of the low idling problem when the car is warm. The idle isn't really jumping around alot when the car is warm it's just a bit low. I can live with it the way it is but if replacing the IACV would fix the problem I would rather do that then adjust the idle screw. The main problem I'm concerned about is actually when the car is cold. I'm trying to determine if the IACV valve is what is causing my car to run rough when it's cold. Also when the car is cold and moving it is making sputtering and hissing noises right where the IACV is located. From what I've been reading the valve is stuck open in the morning which is what is causing the high idle. Could that also be the cause of the car running rough? Maybe trying to clean it again would help. The first time I cleaned it I couldn't get it of the car because one of the hoses was heat melted on. The hose I couldn't get off without cutting it went all the way under the car. I really don't want to have to replace that hose unless I have to, or the part for that matter. I'm about ready to take it to a professional and drop the bucks. The way my cash situation is that is a last resort.
Thanks in advance,

dude, take the eacv off the car, spray it with carb cleaner into the 2 mesh screened holes (not the coolant holes) let it air dri about 20 minutes then reinstall. if idle is still low, adjust the idle screw for god sakes, dont pay someone else to turn a screw..
Go to acuraparts247.com & put in the right info for your car. This is a '93 LS hatch with 5-speed for a dumb example.

The FITV is #9, underneath the throttlebody. Clean that too. Some people have found that if you take off the end cover the guts have come loose & you can tighten them.
The FITV is responsible for raising the idle when cold. But 1700 cold idle doesn't sound too bad. Mine starts at more than 2000 when it's real cold, but drops down below 2000 pretty quickly as it warms up.

Here's where the hoses go, it's probably easier to reach them from underneath, just like the oil filter. Make SURE you get all air pockets out of the cooling system, they'll cause unsteady idle problems.
The idle adjustment screw is #1 in the top picture. Usually the procedure goes something like this, but check a manual for your year.
Warm up the engine completely, all accessories turned off. Unplug the electrical connector for the IACV, it'll want to stall so carefully close the throttle. Adjust the screw to idle at about 450 rpm. When you plug the IACV back in, it brings the idle back up where it should be.

Jim,
Thanks for your help and everyone else as well. The schematics are helpful. Here is a brief update of where I'm at. First of all I did spray a heavy dose of throttle cleaner in the two screen holes and not the coolant lines. I do believe that helped at least a little bit. I'm thinking I may have a second problem, although I've got a feeling they are related. The reason I think they are related is because the noise I've been hearing has gotton more intense after I sprayed inside the iacv. Anyway the second problem I'm having is the hissing noise I've mentioned in earliar posts. The noise sounds like it is coming from the vent. For a while I thought it might be my speedometer but have pretty much ruled that out. The noise has become consistent when the car is cold. It kicks in when the car goes above twenty miles an hour. The faster I go the louder it gets. Also the car runs rough and sounds like it needs a new catalytic converter. I took it to meineke the other day and had the guy check out my exhaust system. Everything was just fine. He mentioned it might have something to do with my fuel pressure rugulator? Anyway the car runs like crap when it's cold and not much better when it is warm. There is a consistent hissing noise that occurs when the car gets moving over twenty. I would really like to identify what it is? I could almost swear its that iacv but then again? Any ideas on where I go from here because nothing actually appears like it has to be replaced. My check engine light isn't coming on and my exhaust is loud but not blowing any weird smoke.

Just wanted to give an update in case there are any other dumb butts out there having low idling problems. My idle was sitting at 500 rpm on my tac. Apparently that is actually 750 acording to the guy who worked on my car. Anyway my idle was sometimes dipping down to 100-200 rpm hundred range at a stop. Add 250 to that if you are my machanic. The engine would knock from being chocked out. Anyway I cleaned the IACV and reset my idle although I didn't bother jumpering the ecu when I did it. It doesn't appear that made any difference. To make a long story short my machanic said he pulled the IDLE screw and cleaned up in there with a brush. That apears to have helped as my car is chocking a lot less then it use to. Anyway, I hope that helps someone save some cash. I just dropped $75 to have a guy clean out a screw.
