Default harness question

Is it possible to put in a 4 or 5pt harness in a car with a full interior? Specifically a 4dr 94 'teg. How could this be achieved? Thanks..

Well, you first should put a roll bar into the car so that if you DO roll over the harness doesn't keep your head up like a golf tee. (FORE! Crunch..)Then, you mount the shoulder straps to the cross bar on the roll bar. Everything is pretty simple after that...Submarine belt either needs a mount drilled through the floor, or mounted to the seat somehow. Lap belts, if there is room, put them on the stock mounting bolts. Keep in mind that a harness is not legal for street use, so I would advise that you keep the stock belts for when you are using the car on the street. HTH.

Now these are the sorts of things that I need to know more about. I read all through my state's traffic codes to make sure everything I had was legal...but Is there a link that anyone can give me to the federal highway safety code? or where can I find all these rules (like harnesses not being legal).

BTW: I don't know of any cop that would write a ticket for wearing a 5-point instead of the 3-point OE.

The key to legallity is "DOT-Approved". If it doesn't say it the Federal Government doesn't allow it on the roads. Chances are a cop won't give you a ticket for wearing one but he can if he wants to. Remember - the government thinks they know what is best and SFI means nothing to them so DOT it is.

True, but the other issue with that is that there are strict safety regulations on the mounting of factory seatbelts, and some idiot (not the intelligent people in this forum, of course) could mount the tailstraps to their lower seat mounts or to the ceiling, and that would not be safe in an accident. Thus, it's much easier for them to place faith in a system which has met appropriate regulations than one that may or may not be safe, depending on the knowledge of the installer.

If you're talking about a harness for Autocross then I would say a Schroth because it is DOT approved and can be used with a full interior. This would not be acceptable for road racing however.

What's the penalty for getting "caught" having a 4 or 5 pt harness rather than stock belts?

It's a seatbelt ticket... assuming your state has those.

I've seen a guy get a seatbelt ticket here with one the goes over your shoulders and hooks in the middle. Cop gave him a ticket because it wasn't hooked. Then again, he was pulled for no reason so he was getting a ticket for SOMETHING...

Also, in most states, a car with harness and not stock belts will fail the safety inspection.
