Default Low RPM growl

hey guys,

Today i started hearing a very deep growl that seems to be coming from the underneed the passenger side foot panel. It is only distinguished at low rpm's, and very loud. I can hear it in second gear at around 1000 rpm's but no other gears. I think i cant hear it other times because of road noise/engine nosie.
I dont really know how to explain it except for the word Growl. Its not really a grind, nor a rattle so...

Little history is that about 2 weeks ago, i started experiencing hard shifting. It takes alot more effort to put the car into gear especially at rpm's greater than 5000.

Tranny oil changed 10k ago with Honda MTF
Oil Change less than 500 miles ago
95 GSR with 135k miles on stock clutch

Anyone have any advice?????
Thanks alot!

are you have problems downshifting? like its really hard to get it into gear downshifting? i had the same problem as you with the hard shifting and it turned out to be a messed up pressure plate. just bought a new clutch kit and installed it all and now it runs great.

it made weird noises a lot. Does ur car sort of chatter or shake when u slip the clutch in first to take off?

passenger side foot panel is pretty close to your tranny, hope it has nothing to do with it though.

when mine was doing that i assumed it was the clutch so i bought a new clutch kit and put it in.. the clutch itself still had some life on it but the pressureplate was fucked.

Well i was thinking of painting my eg flat black, and i happened to stumble on to the myth that since cop radar thingies are designed to bounce the signal off of more vibrant/shiny colors of a car to detect how fast one is moving, a police officer would have a much harder time detecting the velocity at which i am traveling..

well thats a myth like you said b/c my friends camaro is all primer and it still clockable b/c we tried it with one of our cop friends

uhhhhh, thanks guys

Update, i went to a local honda dealership and to my suprize the guy i talked to there was really nice. He sat in my car and heard the growl and after muttering "Oh ****" He said hes 100% positive its the transmission bearings making the noise, and that mine were REALLY bad.

Now my question is for those of you who have had this problem, How much am i lookin at to get it fixed, and how serious is it (ie how much longer can i drive)

I need to drive 250 miles back to the bay area in the next two weeks and am wondering if ill be safe.

Thanks!

sounds like a throwout bearing then. My bearing makes a wierd growl/moan every once in a while.

Thanks man, I got two estimates. One from a shop back home in the bay area for 1200 dollars, and another from a Honda Dealership for anywhere between 1400-2100.

This price includeds a new clutch. I thought it would be smart to do while they have the tranny dropped.
Any advice/more comments welcome

You think you could have them throw in a type r LSD while they're at it? I'm not sure if it would be out of their way or not. But for around $1500, they should! Or you could just try and do it yourself. I have no idea what replacing the trasmission bearings entail, but if it's not too difficult, you could do it yourself. It might be covered in a helms manual too. Either way, good luck man. Oh, don't don't forget a lightened flywheel!

So The Main Shaft Bottem Bearings in the tranny were bad. Jus an update so that if anybody else has this problem they can identify it.
