i fear that horrible grinding noise when shifting

your synchro is prob going out but the reverse is normal, put it in a forward gear before.
i would get gm synchromesh, it got rid of my high rpm 3rd gear grind. keep in mind its just a band aid, not a fix.
how much does it actualy, grind? can u hear it or feel it?

i have that problem as well. when im going into 2nd at high rpm it will grind when i attempt to shift really fast. even if my foot is all the way down on the clutch, it still grinds, its almost like my foot is faster than my clutch. in the same situation, even if i am at high rpm, if i wait just a brief second before going it into 2nd, it engages smoothe, is this for sure a synchro problem? if it is, should i expect bigger tranny problems later? how much to fix this problem? would it just be easier to swap trannys?

ITs most likely a synchro problem and yes it will cause bigger problems, like losing that gear totally.

i have a d16y7 motor, any suggestions on what to do? should i attempt to have this tranny fixed or buy a new one? someone told me the ex tranny is smaller and lighter, maybe that would be the better idea?

Not really your tranny can take a good beating. My last one would gring in third at any RPM unless I just let it slip in by itself. I would recomend shifting slower when at high RPM's so it doesnt get worse, and just get another one you know the syncros are not busted in.

I had that in my '00 EX, and it went away after I installed a freshly rebuilt tranny.
