Default Question about red substance on breaks!?

How do?

Ummm...took my car in today to get my rotors and brake pads replaced. When I picked the car up I noticed that there was and still is a red substance on the pads/calipers. Can someone please tell me what it is? Please, no guessing! Thanks.

I realize that this may be a noob question. Pre-apology.

It's a grease they put on the back of the pads to keep them from squeaking.

Actually, that's happened to me before. It was a pigeon that refused to get out of the way. So, I had to give it to em'.
