Default H22 tranny on F22

Hi there, I've been reading up a lot on the automatic > manual conversion and I have been considering doing it.

i had a few questions about it, however.

1) a) Would a H22 tranny fit and/or be worthwhile on an F22 engine? I have little to no plans of ever running boost. It's a daily driver.

b) If the H22 tranny fits and is worthwhile, would H22 tranny brackets fit in my 5th gen's engine bay no problems, or would i have to have my own made up.

2) i have cruise control. I know it is possible to attach this to a manual, but my only query is how effective is it, and does it work in all gears? Does depressing the clutch pedal deactivate the cruise, or is it still only the brake that affects it?

3) Power difference. I know that a manual transmission will increase driveability and response, but does it make a big difference in power? Do the auto transmissions have a habit of losing power from the engine to the wheels, or are they good to begin with?

Any responses are welcome, but don't bother flaming if these questions have already asked. as i said, i searched.

1. a. yes it will fit and only worthwhile if you want to lose a little gas mileage for a little more gettup

b. not sure, never seen a write up on this swap

2. Not sure, BUMP for someone who knows

3. Auto's don't cause it to lose power it just seems so because of the loss of response

DO NOT PUT AN H22 TRANNY ON AN F22 MOTOR!

the gearing will be way too short...it's short on the h22, and that's with a 7400 rpm redline...imagine only being able to rev to 6200 on the same tranny...the 1-2 shift would be at about 20 mph, and the 2-3 at about 45...

1.) yes it will fit and bolt up just fine...but for a daily driver, the gearing is way too short

b.) you will have no issues with the mounts...

2.) don't know, but i thought cruise control was controlled on the t/b...does it have anything to do with the tranny? but you will have to figure out a way to rig up a cutoff with the clutch...

3.) yes, auto's lose more power in the transmission than manuals because there are about 10x more parts in the autos that the power from the engine has to go through before reaching the wheels...remember that every part that the engine has to rotate or move is power that could be going to the wheels...b/c a manual transmission only has a handful of parts to move, less power is lost through the transmission...

i remember reading on H-T a while back the h22 tranny is good for knocking a 1/2 second off your 1/4 mile time. sounds worthwhile to me but nick-h brings up a good point about it for a daily driver. ill give up some civility for a 1/2 second.. i like to shift anyways.

just to add a lil somethin, most autos also lose power b/c of "soft" torque converters.....basically, there's a lot of slippage in the torque converter to make shifts smoother and deliver power that feels smoother and more linear.....putting in a performance torque converter(if you can find one) will usually pickup a good bit of power at the wheels

well that's most likely just on the h22 that you've heard that...i haven't really seen any 1/4 mile times of an f22 mated to an h22 tranny...i'm sure it would be drastically different, and probably faster, but at what cost...???

so if it wasn’t a daily driver and you wanted it for speed then would you still jot recommend it? Would you recommend another tranny compatible with the f22 engine if there is one possible

Regarding Cruise Control, It's controlled by the throttle body and the Cruise Control Actuator. When you do the swap, you can wire up the CC switch on the clutch pedal as there is one on the brake pedal and the clutch pedal. If you don't wire up the CC switch on the clutch pedal the only way to deactivate it is the brake pedal or pressing both buttons on the steering wheel at the same time.

Something to think about, you can go with a H22 gearbox and swap out the fifth gear or final drive if you really want a cruising gear for a lot of highway driving, but it'll cost a lot in labour and parts (the machined fifth gear is about $200 if I remember)

Seems like a lot of effort. That said, I am currently driving a DC5 Type-R, so short gearing is normal to me, you can be in fifth gear before you have even reached 40mph if you want
