Default OT: Building a Car Matrix for the Friend

So here is the dilema - my best friend is dying for a new car. He had a Type R at one point in his life but has since veered of course (he drives a Passat wagon for god's sake). I need your help coming up with a short list of cars to present to him as possible contenders to get him out of the funk.

Criteria include:
Must be a driver's car and exciting
Must have usable back seats
The Evo and STi are obvious candidates, but to racer boy for him
Will be dual purpose grocery getter/track car
Must be something somebody can get passionate about

I know I just decribed the ITR - but what else is there?

tl/accord are nice but fwd wouldnt be my choice when considerations are in the 30k range.

also, tell your friend to not feed into that "boy racer" ****. Those two cars are sweet, fast, and practical.

Most "man racers" wouldnt be able to handle that car at its limits, so tell them to suck it.

The new Audi 2.0T looks hot. Not to ricey/racey and has dual purpose abilities.

How about a new TL or TSX?

I considered a 330 before I picked up the S......

It isn't about the performance - it is about the image. But no worries - I've talked him into driving the EVO MR (or at least looking at one) tomorrow.

swap out the ricey tails for EVO VII tails and swap the decklid with a lesser Lancer, and the looks are much improved

And once you get him in a BMW, you'll have to pry him out. Some of the best damn cars ever.

The GTO is a nice idea too....

**** image. People overlook performance for "image."

Either way, If he want image, E36 m3 all the way. Awesome performance, and perfect looks. Good Luck

S4 new or old body style. (not sure if your buddy is looking for brand new only) Both very nice and 4 door with plenty of track/racing potential.

I like the TSX. Just enough for the price.

I failed to see a cost limit, but seeing the evo and Sti, I'll cap it off at low-$30,000 US.

Also, by 'new' I'm not sure if you mean a new (off the lot, new car smell) or new (I sold my Passat and my *new* car is... (new to him not new in general)). I'm probably reading into it too much but here goes

TSX
E28 M5
3 series - E30 M3/E36 325i/328i///M3 (E46 330ci also?)
New Mustang GT (dunno about back seats, however recent mustangs had useable rears)
GTO (def not my style!)
350Z
Evo with the wing off?
S4 (not the new one, the turbo 6)

and my fave along with E30/36 M3 - S2000. (lol i know i know i know... rear seats)

I'm sure I've missed some.
As for 'boy racer' I understand. However my opinion on the matter is that its all up to the owner as to how they act and how they are percieved. I don't recieve any unwanted attention in my PY nor do I draw any unneeded attention to me while driving the PY. Still there is that default amount of generalizing about the owner, ricer flybys/stoplight revvers, and theft issues, but thats something each person has to decide whether or not the extra tollerance is worth it. Doesn't sound like he's too interested in that, understandable.

Jon, you described a Type R as you mentioned... sure he can't be convinced to get another?

I don't think anyone has mentioned the Mazdaspeed 6 or the VW R32 yet. Both have good performance in a more grown up way. Personally I'd prob go with a used M3 or a 330ci.

Mazdaspeed 6 = not available yet.

I'd take the M3 or GTO, although GTO rear-seat accessibility is a little awkward (once you're back there it's nice and spacious though ).
