Transmission dying on 98 civic lx, so many options, what to do?
Recently on my 98 civic 5spd lx my transmission has been making a noise, later on I found out that it is the input driveshaft bearing. To have that fixed as well as the clutch replaced (since i'm at 170,000km) the dealer quoted me $1700, $950 for labor alone. I have found a transmission from a wrecker that had 40,000 on it but it had a damaged casing which had been fixed and they offer a 100day warranty for $500.
Should I go along with the wrecked tranny, which i'm scared might have problems in the future, and just get them swapped, that would cost much less, or should I look at this as an opportunity upgrade the whole engine/tranny since i have 115hp right now with sohc and no vtec.
I'm not gonna spend almost $2000 to have a transmission fixed, but I would spend a bit more to have a better performing engine.
Please, let me know your opinions.

The problem is that the non-VTEC 6th gen trannies seem to have this issue with the input shaft bearing - so sourcing another, perhaps slightly lower mileage unit, might put you back in the same situation you are in now in a couple thousand miles.
I'm guessing you're only option is really to source a tranny and have a shop install it for you? Can you do any of this work yourself?

Non-vtec trannies have issues???
I have always noticed it being the other way around

Oh yeah - the Y7 tranny - bleh.
I don't see this happening nearly as often on the Y8.
And sometimes the Main Shaft bearing (opposite end of ISB) gets chewed up too...had that happen to me and various others.

Found a tranny from a swap which had 60K on it for $500 they want $300 for intallation, I could maybe get it installed cheaper through a friend or something. I can't change the tranny myself, don't have the tools or space to do it.
At least this one hasn't been damaged

i would just go in and replace your main shaft and counter shaft bearing. i think there like maybe 30 dollars a piece so your looking at around 150 or less if you can do it your self.
**** that noise - $500. And how do you know it hasn't been damaged - this ISB/Mainshaft bearing is a gradual thing - it didn't take place overnight. Around 75-80k is when I first started to notice noises.
If the tranny were an Ex model - 5 bills is still stretch, but I guess if thats all you can find, then so be it.
$300 for installation sounds about right - it took me and pops about 5 hours total to remove tranny, replace clutch, re-install tranny. If you and a friend have the tools/space (and a Helms), then by all means do it - it certainly isn't hard.
