trans swap 90 civic hb 4 to 5 speed
We have a 90 honda civic hb 1.5L that currently has a bad 4 speed. We would like to repalce it with a 5 speed. Will any (other than SI) 88-91 5 speed fit? What will I need to to the interchange?
Thanks.

You will want a 90-91 Civic Si tranny, or if you cannot find the Si then get a DX.
They both have the same gears, but the DX has a taller final drive, which makes it accelerate slower because it takes longer to get through the gears.
Both will bolt in the same.

if you are willing to get a new clutch/flywheel, you can widen your tranny options to any year, 88-91

Thanks guys. Very good info. I think we are going to get the 91 trans. Not sure what it was out of (DX vs SI) but as long as it works we will be happy.

Actually you can keep the bigger 90-91 spec flywheel and big clutch set-up if you run an 88 spec tranny.
How?
I run an 88-spec mainshaft ZC with a 1986 Prelude Si clutch disc and the 90-91 Civic Si pressure plate and flywheel.
The 1986 Prelude disc has the same shaft size as the 88-spec trannies, but has the surface diameter of the 90-91 Civic discs.
