mig on sch.40 -Which strong enough???
posted on fab-forum but want more input: thanks guys!
Hey everyone I was just wondering what it takes to get good penetration on ss sch.10 and sch. 40 metal with a mig? Im getting ready to buy a millermatic 175 tom. from a local welding place but I am starting to think the millermatic 135 will do the job. I dont want to have to do mulitple passes and have a machine that can barely do the job. but on the other hand I dont want to buy the 175 and think why the **** I bought it and it could of easily been done with the 135. Let me know guy's which one would be a better overall machine for my application. The thickest im going to be welding is ss sch. 40 for sure. Would the 175 benefit me in any way for this thick of metal over the 135? Thanks for the help guys! -Nick
also heard some people say that they feel the linclon puts out more power ? how could this be if there the same output and everything? lincoln 175 mm 175? maybe it's just a preference. -Nick

When it comes to welding machines, unless you plan to do ONLY a very limited number of things for many years to come, you're better off to buy what you can afford....or you'll end up wishing you had later.
I bought a PT175 after about 18 years of welding. It was the first machine I had bought for myself. When you weld for a living, you can usually take stuff to work and weld it, so I never felt the need. Well, soon after buying that machine, I regretted it and wished I'd bought something more powerful. I sold it for $900 and bought a used Sync 350 for $1500. I'm much happier with this machine, and it cost me no more than the PT did when I bought it.
I usually reccomend the Hobarts for small MIG machines. They're great quality machines, just as reliable as any Miller or Lincoln, have the same parts availability, and are cheaper. You will pay less for the same quality and performance if you go with a Hobart.

get the 175. I use a 135 on sch 40 and it does fine but its turned almost all the way up to do a good job, Im not sure if it will affect the longevity of my the machine, but I would still like to have a little more juice sometimes.
One pass is OK with it like this and i get really good penetration after some practice. Here's one of my best, recent welds, it's ceramic coated but you get the idea.

Looks good bailhatch, well guys I went with the mm 135. It's alot more practicle for me now. The 220v would of just been a big headeache wiring and I wouldnt of been able to take it anywere. -This was a biggie for me. Anyway for the most part im going to be weling thinner materials. Well thanks for the help guys, yall really did help me out alot. -Nick
