Just got 1991 Honda Accord Ex
Hey everyone,
I have been lurking these forums for awhile and decided to finally post when I got the pictures.
I recently got a 1991 Honda Accord Ex. It has some rust damage, which I believe is minor, and a few scrapes here and there. Other than that, I am loving it. I spent a few days working on the interior and it is very very nice now for such an old car.
The rust damage is from its former owner who lived in NY.
Well here are the images.

Now the rust.

My current concern is removing the rust. I've never really worked on a car past changing the oil, changing a tire, and replacing a belt so I am not the most car-saavy guy here.
Any experience with rust removal products? Or is going to a local Car Body Shop a good choice? I'd like to do it myself if thats possible.
My plans for the Honda are just Rust Removal and to replace my windshields. Maybe in the future I will do some other things, but I just want to have it looking 'clean'.
Regards,

thats an awful lot of rust, I would say that your best bet will be to go to a local body shop. it looks to me like you are past the point that any rust removal product will do any good
Just to clear something up, the first Rust picture is again along the body near the wheels. It might just be me, but for some reason it looks like the roof to me.
Most likely then in a few days Ill take it over and see how much it'll cost to get it repaired.

You could try and use Rost-Off(a german rust eliminator that we use in autobody) If I were you I would take it to a body shop. I have some rust similar to that only not as bad. I am sandblasting the area to get rid of the rust. Its like a cavity, you have to dig it all out not just cover it up or it will spread. It will spread I gaurantee.
I like it. I was looking for a 4th Gen in need of a motor when I swapped out my H23 Prelude motor for an H22. I found a 89 240SX though. A 4th Gen with an H23 or H22 sounds like a lot of fun.
How is the rest of the car?? Much rust?? What other issues do you have with it??

that rust is very BAD. it might look ok, but once you take that rear bumper off, u're gonna be in for a big surprise. more than likely you're going to have to cut off that rust/bad metal, and weld some new metal and bondo it so it'll look nice. goodluck!!! and yes frost white ownz!!!!
I'm taking it tomorrow afternoon to get looked at for the Rust problem.
Past that, there isn't much wrong with the car. One side has some minor scratches and a bit of red paint (most likely from another car opening their door and hitting the Honda).
The engine runs great. The last owner bought it and only used it to drive to work, and never used the backseats which is why they are spotless.
I am going to have a lot of fun with this car.
Minor things I need to do.
-New floormats
-New Windshield Wipers
Almost forgot... hmm... this is strange. The old owner gave me a can opener, the very old kind. The button on the floor to open up the side gas tank hatch isn't working. So basically I have to take the can opener, and flip it open. Strange?

Rust is like cancer. The job needs to be done right away, otherwise it will spread, If not taking care of the right way, it will COME BACK, I promise you that!
