Clunking sound when I brake and accelerate...
Well this has really been bugging me.
I have a "clunk" noise that comes from the drivers side front suspension area when I am initially braking, and initially accelerating. I inspected the driveline, and the outer CV looked worn...So I replaced the axle...
Still does it.
I unbolted most of the suspension peices when i installed the axle, and torqued them all down. I also checked if there was play in the radius rod, and there was non.
Any ideas?
I might just take it too a shop.

Let me know if that does anything!
However, I've checked the condition of the upper ball joint and theres no play (grab the wheel and pull/push).
So I don't think thats it.

Hrmm...havn't checked the motor mounts...

check the front and rear motor mounts.
my old crx broke the front mount a couple times and it would clunk
every time u would pull out or let off the gas.

I have the "exact" same problem. I have recently decided to do a complete lower front end rebuild. Unfortunatly, rain over the weekend kept me from making my attempt. Here is what I will be replacing...
Inner LCA bushings
Lower Shock LCA bushings
All radius rod bushings
Sway bar mount bushings
Sway bar end link bushings
Steering Gearbox bushings (all 5)
Steering rack inner bushing
Steering Gearbox boots
Washers between front Sub-frame & chassis
Front Sub-frame Engine Mount
If this doesn't help, I'm gonna be really pissed. I've probably spent hours under the front end of that car trying to figure this one out. All the upper & lower balljoints are sealed & seated, so I don't think its those. I'll update after I finish...

My car does it a little on initial braking. But it's really not that bad. I think it might be my ball joints. I replaced the lower ball joints and that helped a ton, so I'm going to be replacing the upper pretty soon and see if that cures the rest. Hopefully it will, I'd hate for something to break that I've overlooked.
Well so far I've:
- replaced the drivers side axle...still clunking
- replaced both UCAs with new OEM...still clunking
- Checked all individual components for play (by using just my physical force)...everythings fine.
Since my passenger side wheel is about 1" off center (I made another post about this...
), I will probubly replace the crossmember and see if that helps.
If not...I'm taking it too a shop.

Okay, I have finally gotten time to work on my front end. After a hard 8 hours of wrenching in my one car garage by myself, I finally got rid of that damn clunking sound. Here is all the work I did.
1. Replaced Front LCA bushings ($10 to press out/in each bushing @ the machine shop) $40.00
2. Replaced radius rod bushings.
3. Replaced Sway bar mount bushings.
4. Replaced half my sway bar end link bushings (I ordered wrong quantity
)
5. Replace front Engine mount (that attaches to crossmember).
6. Cleaned & sanded front crossmember mounting surfaces (on chassis too).
7. Replaced front Crossmember gaskets.
It was definently worth it. Good luck guys...

I wish you would of done all those mods 1 by 1 and narrowed it down so that we would have a better idea... I have that clunking noise too, I to the point where I just dont even care any more I just turn up the radio...

I agree...
Thanks for the info though. I just don't have **** for time right now to be tinkering with this damn car.

I understand guys, but I just got fed up with it. I got under there, and made a list of everything that was deteriorated. I then purchased all the parts from honda. Technically this is a one at a time, since I bought enough parts to do three different areas of the car (still gotta do the steering & sunroof). Sorry, I didn't do one part at a time, but in my situation that would have been a total waste of time...
The car drives like new though (except for some steering slop that will be taken care of shortly

check to make sure ur radius arms are tight and that there bushings are good. Make sure your calipers arent loose. Struts.
There really isnt a whole lot that will make noise if its loose when your starting and stoping. the balljoints and tie rods might make noise over bumps but not when force is put on them horizontally.

I had a bad balljoint on my 94 civic that would pop when I hit the gas hard enough, and then hit the brakes. With that one though, you could tell the LCA wasn't seated fully on the Ball Joint stud (compared to the other side). That made it a no brainer...
