Default built LS vs. built GSR

If you were going to buy a new short block and head, get it sleeved and equipped with pistons/rods which motor would be best to swap into an integra LS..

benifits of GSR
-simple power
-lots of top end horsepower

benifits of LS
-easy to find
-lots of torque
-do not have to change oil or water pumps
-do not have to with ECU or any wiring
-about 600 cheaper
-could use the 600 left over to build head and have even more saved money cause u wont need to change ecu etc..

At first I got to thinking if I was gonna build a motor I might as well build a GSR but after looking at these different factors it seems you could build up the LS head to make close to GSR top end but without sacrificing the LS's torque and you can save even more money because u dont need GSR ecu etc..

what do u guys think?

not all motor at all.. this is a built turbo motor, both motors would be pushing the same turbo, same boost etc..

The way I see it is work with what you have. If you have a Ls or Gsr just use what you have and improve on it. Because I know you and I know whay you want to do I say build the Ls. Both the LS and Gsr have advantages and disadvantages over each other, but some of the disadvantages are only if you are gonna boost 20+psi and full race.

For example, people talk about the rod to storke ratio of the LS, which I do agree is bad, but I think you can get away with it if you dont raise the rev-limiter on the car. I only see things being a problem with boost if you change some of the things like rev-limit and so on.

Your wallet will be alot happier if you keep it simple and go with what you have, just make sure its with turbo.

see thats the thing, I want to raise the Rev limiter VERY badly.. at least to 7500..

I know there are things to do to make the LS better for reving higher such as Z10 block girdle, ITR oil pump, and building the head but I know it will not survive as long as a B16A or even GSR with those revs..

I may have an LS transmission but with a 6800redline, and 7100 fuel cut off my car tops out each gear at less of a mph then a GSR.. 4th gear on LS only goes to 110 and GSR goes to 114.. with that in mind and if i get a built motor and run alot of boost where ill be pushing over 110 in the 1/4 ill have to shift to 5th, unless i 1) get larger wheels or 2) raise rev limit.. hummmm

why is that?

if u look in your owners manual it tells the top mph for each gear for LS, GSR and type R.. GSR is 114 unless u have changed wheels, revlimiter etc..

I think my third will reach a little over 80, maybe 84, but thats just what it says, that doesnt neccessarily mean thats what im hitting cause whenever I drive by those radars for the cops my posted mph is always 4-5 less then my tach says..

I'm not turbo yet......Buuuttt, when racing at the track I am about 7 mph off. My speedo reads 100 when im going through the traps at 93. I have had my car up to roughly 145 or so on the highway. Ofcourse I'm lookin at 7 mph off at 100 so I figure maybe 133-135. This was right around 7K on my LS.
I dont know where I am going with this. But since everyone is talking about it, I might as well chime in.......

But what Art said. Go with what you have. If your buying a new LS block, figure you have to do all the vtec performance stuff (which is more expensive). If your going with LS then I would say go with a small turbine and a BIG compressor so you can make serious power at a lower RPM and get it there before that low redline--well, compared to the vtec motors, which should use the larger turbine to spool later when the torque curve is higher.
Regarless, traction and tuning is everything. I say spend most of the money there. Thats how you will make your car perform over the less budgeted. My .02

my fourth gear tops out at right about 100 at the track... I ALWAYS have to shift into 5th.... its a bitch but you have to do it (untill i run 24in slicks)

At most tracks I believe the trap speed is not the speed at which your car passes through the end mark. I'm sure I'm going to mess this up so feel free to correct me here but I think the trap speed on your timeslip is the average speed across the last 60 ft or so of the 1/4 mi.

That's correct, I don't know if it's the last 60', I think it's the last 200' or so, but I know it's not the speed at which you cross the line
