my latest fiberglass project. (pics inside)
My boy just got some scissor hinges for the lambo conversion....so we decided to spice the doors up a little since everyone will be checking them out. the funny thing is Ive had scissor doors since 2002 and I have yet to do this to my doors.

I know, why did I cut the matting? Ive found that by cutting it near the corners of the curves, and ripping it near the edges make it realy easy to lay and shape to the dramatic curves.

this is the second layer with a extra layer of resin to sand a little prior to the bondo.

this after a primer/sealer, two top coats, and three layers of clear coat. ooooo pretty.

heres the panel some what put back together after an application of fine cut rubbing compound and hand glaze.
I'm painting the switch covers that fill the holes in the top of the panel and the vent will be replaced with a tweeter and get its own application of fiberglass and paint.
once he gets the new speakers we will add an enclosure to point the speaker up more and were gonna rip all the vinyle off and overlay some 2x2 twill (carbon fiber)...Ill post up more pics after we get the carbon fiber and speakers in.
Im open for critisism...I dont cry when people say I suck.

thanks alot for the encouragement guys!

they were carpeted panels with a mesh grill. I soaked the carpet with resin then applied a structural layer. the next layer was layed in certain spots to raise the surface in certain areas, then a final layer with a smooth coat of resin. then a moderate amount of bondo to make it smooth.

so was I bro...just go to lowes and by some resin and matting and start at it. you pick up your own tricks along the way.
now painting and molding is a dfferent story, those take a little practice.
we got the scissor kit installed with the panel back on...Ill post up pics tonight. it turned out realy well.

i want to get into this stuff too.. but what are the steps? next time can you take a step by step write up with pictures? or do you know any sites that has it.. thanks

Laying carbon fiber is similar to laying fiberglass. You just have to be more careful in laying the sheets to get the weave to stay smooth and straight. With FG, you can sand and paint to mask any mistakes. CF isn't as forgiving.

It's easy. You have the dry FG sheet. Cut it to shape. Mix your resin and just apply it on top of the FG sheets. (If you want it to come off the part, make sure to lay some foil first or coat the part with mold release)
The hard part is sanding it down and making it smooth.

Did you paint it yourself? If you did paint job is awsome 2

yeah I painted it myself...I dont care what anyone says about canned paints if you know what your doing it looks just as good as a painting system. which I will be purchasing a full painting system. thanks for the props

definately! smoothing takes nothing but practice! so grab some body filler and take a hammer to a peice of metal and practice working the body filler.
although some people have the feel for it and some people dont. when I say feel I literally mean feel, if you cant feel the high spots then your work will suck. there are plenty of tricks for finding the high and low spots but they will not work with every surface shape and size.

</TD></TR></TABLE>
typed? and yes if you just want to paint a piece in the car you can just overlay it with fiberglass and make it smooth for painting. keep in mind though some surfaces are ignorant when it comes to bonding to the fiberglass...you make have to drill holes and glass the under side also
paper mache' could be considered like fiberglassing...same concept at least. I would'nt make a face mold with fiberglass though!
