96 civic type r motor or gsr
im going to buy a motor, and im looking around, the b16b is 180ish in horse and around 118ft/lbs of torque, and the gsr is 178 horse and 129ft/lbs other than the price tags attached to them what would be better in my 91 hatch. I know that a gsr in a 94 cx hauls ***, but i dont believe ive seen a the civic type r motor in a 4th gen (at least not around here.) what would you recomend
I have yet to see a B16B perform very well in stock trim. My buddy had one in his EG and I gave it to him all the time. Even when I was running my stock B16A. He spent $5000 CAN on his B16B and ran 14.8's. My B16A engine cost me $3000 CAN and I ran 14.4's. I personally don't really like any 1.6 liter engines much, too low on torque. In my opinion the B16B is also way over priced, you could buy other parts with the money you'll save to make the GSR even faster. I have felt the torque difference of a 1.8 liter first hand and I'll pick a B18C any day. How much money does each swap cost?
b16 is 3900 for everything(alternater, lsd, axels, linkage, ect.) gsr is 3000 for everything
i see what your saying about the price difference, and i know about the driving difference, 1.8 in hatch is nice, vtec pull is amazing, but like i said i havent seen b16's abaility, but if your saying its cut out to be more than its worth, mabey gsr with teg type r cams
just so i can mention the type r name, hah but seriously, thinking about it with the extra 900$ i could actually afford something good for the car, aside from the engine

There you go, if your a really good driver with a healthy JDM GSR and get some ITR cams in it, you'll make some pretty good power. You wont be disappointed with a B18C, trust me I upgaded and never looked back. I only wish I never had my B16A and bought myself a GSR in the very beginning.
Oh well, you live, you learn. Good luck with your swap choice.

I have a B16B and let me tell, NO STOCK GSR swapped in an equal size car will take you if you have equal driving skills. Of course the GSR has displacement but the CTR has a longer power band with higher compression, larger cams, ported/polished head and LSD. He'll be shifting at 8400/8800 and you be shifting at 9200/9500. Besides should you DECIDE you want to go 1.8, just throw an LS,GSR or ITR crank in your CTR and your done because a CTR is just a destroked 1.8. Then you has a badged 1.6L thats really a 1.8L. Just sleep after that............

You must have had a freak b16a. I dont think a b16a can beat a b16b but then again I wasn't there I have a b16b and yes torque is nice but its all in what your into.

What do you want? Lets do the math with the 900 you save you have to buy cams thats $300-350 THE B16B GOT THE CAMS. I think you would also need an intake manifold which is about $170-200 THE B16B HAS THAT TOO, AND WOULD YOU LIKE VALVETRAIN AND A LSD SHORTGEARED TRANNY, I believe you would well your way past the $900 dollars you saved. But at least you got torque.

YOU GUYS ARE SUPRISING ME! Your telling this kid to to not spend the extra $900 dollars on a CTR to get a P&P head, CTR cams, CTR trans, CTR throttle body, CTR intake manifold, CTR valve train... all so he can get 5-6lbs more torque out of a GSR?
LIKE I SAID, IF YOU WANT A 1.8, THROW AN LS OR GSR CRANK IN YOUR CTR AND YOU WILL HIGHER HP & TORQUE THAN THAT GSR ALL DAY.
With a 1.8 the B16B crank it would most likely put down 180HP to 190HP.
You would have to spend ALOT more than $900 dollars to get that power out of a GSR. CTR cams $350, Head P&P $900, Trans LSD $350, Valve train $250, Intake Manifold $180, Throttle body $200, Header $200....
^ Even after spending all that, you would still make less power that dropping the 1.8 crank in the B16B.

I say get the GSR. Yes, it might have less power stock. But when it comes to potential for further power increases, the GSR has the CTR beat due to its increased displacement. Simply put, there is a reason why everybody wants a B18C (whether it be GSR or ITR). And that is because it is simply the best B-series motor out there.
i agree with EGgsrAM's and japspec's posts.
B16b is pimp as hell with a GSR / ITR / Ls crank. Higher redline, nice powerband... sick if it goes in an EG / EK. But it all depends on how you like to drive. Crazy *** high rpm shifting goes hand in hand with the B16b, its made for a small eg/ek and not an integra...you dont *need* the extra torque. I love me some 8.5 - 9.5k shifts so b16 all the way. But if ya wanna play around with stuff and get good nubmers also then id say Ls-Vtec or b18/20 but might come out pricey when you add it all up. Theyre all viable options, but its more personal preference and driving style than anything else. Until you drive or see both in action and see the pros and cons theres really nothing we can say to prove ones better than the other because quite honestly theyre both great engines...its why we're all here.

I agree w/ the guys that say B16B over the gsr...
Lets think about this again...
Factory LSD
Better cams
Shorter gearing
Better intake manifold (lighter also)
Better valvetrain
Factory re-worked bowls(not a full p+p,but better than stock)
Higher compression
Bigger throttle body
all this for $900,the choice should be obvious...
The fact that you can stroke it later down the road is good too...
Regular B16's have the shorter deck which kinda limits you in stroke unless you get into custom length rods and raised wristpins,etc...
And if you go all out, your CTR parts will sell for a hell of alot more than plain old GSR parts...
If you got the $, get the B16B

get the gsr..bigger is always better..i loved my 92dx hatch..it had a 01 usdm b18c1 in it and a cheap ebay intake plus a upgraded ecu and i was able to go 13.7 in the 1/4 full exhaust with just the pass and back seats out..not to mention i had air conditioning...the b16b is a good motor but torqueless
or since the b16b is $3900 already..might as well cough out a couple more bills to get a b18c type r motor...you'll have the lsd and the bigger displacement..that's what i'd do

JDM GSR!!!!
I just got mine yesterday......and I'm in love, Vtec pulls pretty hard, and it's got more torque then the B16b. Pulls very hard 3rd and 4th gear after 6K. Just my .02

^ Smart ones that dont read replies.
1. Dont tell him to get a GSR just because you bought one and couldnt afford the CTR.
2. The CTR is a destroked 1.8.
3. As stated above multiple times, if he drops a LS/GSR/TR crank in his CTR he will blow your doors off hands down. Honestly, you could throw a set of BC4's in your GSR and I would put money that he would still make more power across the board.
4. Whoever told him to put down more cash to get the ITR is not making sense. A CTR at 1.8 will put down more power than a ITR (Higher compression, Larger cams) use the extra cash to replace the crank!
READ THE REPLIES KIDS. Im not leaving this post alone because there is SO MUCH misinformation flying around. I will continue to post the truth again and again after these people until it stops.
