I would want to find out what code the engine light is throwing. For all you know it could not be just one, it could be like 5 or something. Take it for a test drive straight to AutoZone and have them hook it up to an OBD scanner, its free.
Get the car inspected by a reputable dealer or a trustworthy mechanic. I did this when I purchased a car a little while ago and I saved me 3000 dollars . The car drove fine and looked great but needed 3000 dollars in repairs.
^^^ word.
find out what the CEL is indicating before you buy the car - you could be buying someone else's problems. like mentioned above, autozone will run the CEL codes free of charge.
btw, how much are you buying it for?
let us know what the CEL threw when you get back from autozone... good luck.
