Keep the thing, its bought and paid for (?) and you may want/need it down the road. After you are racing pick some points and reference RPM/speed use a place like racegearbox.com and figure out if it will help or not, then sell it.

yeah, i would keep it to Jeremy. I know all those other guys said it didn't help but most of them are down south which has much bigger tracks. If you're going to run the NER schedule, you're going to wish you had that 4.9 at NHIS and LRP. Keep it for now and make a decision later. You'll come to find out most of the guys that primarily run NHIS and LRP are running 5.0+ final drive gears.
I know I just gave you advice but one thing you'll find out is that you need to go with what works for you. What others find works great doesn't always work for you. Going on what other people have tried is great and a good way to get a jumpstart but always take advice with a grain of salt. I like to have my own evidence if something works or not.
i say keep it and when you have the money for an LSD say after the season just do both at once and try it.

why not sell it for $700, then spend $400 on a 4.785 FD and $300 on an ITR lsd? do them both in one fell swoop, and have a compromise FD and traction, and spend what ever you would be saving up for an lsd on something else (track time)?

that's the post i was referring to when people said keep the 4.4. The two major tracks in the NER are both smaller than 1.6 miles with 7 and 12 turns. Hell, the beamers that run well run 5.0+ FD's as well as the RX'7's. That's why I said keep it and give it a try. You've already got it.

i suppose the 4.9 probably isn't the best thing for a track that favors high-hp, high speed cars (like most tracks down south), but then, those tracks don't really favor anything that doesn't have serious power behind it (which disqualifies every stockish honda except the nsx and s2k, and even then....).
So, i guess he should just make a decision based on the track(s) he's primarily going to be running. if they're big, high-speed tracks, the 4.4 might be a better bet. if they're small and fairly technical (lots of braking) a 4.9 or 4.7 may be better.
Honestly though, if you do nothing else (which might not be a bad idea) get the LSD. you can install it yourself with relatively no difficulty as long as you have: the ability to do careful, meticulous work, a helms, the normal tools (metric wrench set, torque wrench, breaker bar), an angled feeler guage, a rubber mallet, and snap ring pliers. A bench vise is certainly helpful as well. And watch out for those shift fork set screws with the spring loaded steel *****. they usually take two days to get from a dealership. don't ask how i know.
The traction difference is astoundingly obvious.
If you have any questions feel free to send me an IM.

I bought the ATS final drive for a good price and thought I would install it with an LSD, but again the money dried up for now until I can replentish it. Basically, to not allow myself to get in over my head, I have 10% of my paycheck deposited directly into a "car fund" (savings account) and this is play money (although the wife thinks 10% is too much)... Anyways, for now if I want to at least drive the car, I was going to sell the ATS, buy new tires instead (unless I want to run my azenis's). This isn't a good idea?

10% isn't that bad. i think i was drunk one night and my wife somehow got me to agree that whatever i spend on my car i have to give her at the same time. so everything now costs me twice as much (hence Project Crapi - the low budget track *****). I'm still trying to figure out how to get out of that one.
It seems like you just really want to change something on the car. Just think about what you'd rather do, track the car or mod the car. While both avenues have their virtues, one is definitely more entertaining than the other.

well, if you got it for a good price and you need tires and entry fees then yeah, i agree. It's probably wise to sell it. I just thought you were selling it cause people said the 4.4FD was fine.
