91 accord ex just died - help
i was driving my 91 accord ex stick yesterday and when i stopped at a light it just died, it wouldnt restart, it has never done this before, i changed the spark plugs, oil, tried to jump start it nothing, the car makes the cranking noise but wont start, i believe when i turn the key to the on position the fuel pump makes noise not sure though -slight hum from the back of the car, when i try to start it and keep it going their is this noise that comes from the back kinda like a slight screaching, by the way when i drove the car for like the past month the car would stumble if i gave it to much gas, especially at higher speeds, but did it through all the gears, please help
check for power at the Black/yellow wire at the dist when the key is 'on' or 'crank'.
Are ya getting spark? did ya slightly open the fuel fitting at the injector rail to see if you have fuel pressure?

I have a 91 Honda Accord that was hesitating some when I gave it gas then just quit at a red light and wouldn't start again. I thought it was a fuel pump but 2carpros site told me to change the fuel filter first. I changed it and it was fixed. If yours hasn't been changed for awhile then that might be it.
ok so i just went out to the car and took one of the ignition wires out of the bank and put a spark plug in it and layed it on the motor and when i tried to start it there is no spark, but there was a strong fuel smell that came into the car, i went and changed the cap and ignition rotor and still nothing no spark just a strong smell of fuel when i tried to start it alot - i went to auto zone and they told me their is no coil for this car and that i need to replace the whole distributor, but that costs 270 dollars
, please help i need this car running by saturday
by the way i appreciate everyones help

It is quite possibly a failed ignitor ( small modual inside the distributer)not uncommon for them to fail on the older accords, and somewhat cheaper than a new distributer ( about 70 bucks or less )

how do i change the ignitor on this car, is it located under the distributor cap, also those wiring harness that connect to the distributor how do those come off i tried to press on the tab and undo them but it doesnt seem that is the way and i dont want to damage them, thanks
I would just go to a junkyard and pick up a distributor if you don't want to pay the price from the Auto Parts stores. Also, check eBay for distributors. I have seen them go for under $150 on there. If you really need your car running by Saturday you should just hit your local junkyards and find a distributor. It would be a lot easier to just change the whole thing out.

yes, it is under the dist. cap, then remove the rotor and then the dust shield. it will be a little box looking thing with a few spade connector things coming out and wires going to it. if your going to buy a new one you might also refer to it as an ignition control module, the only reason i say this is because alot of autoparts stores didnt know what i was talking about when i said ignitor. on those distributer plugs take them off of the metal clips first then pull them apart.

True story... I had the same problem with my 92 Ex accord auto. The damn thing would start for like .5 seconds and stutter and then die like i cut the key off. Felt like it was sucking fumes or out of gas. I would wait for like 15 min and it would start right up. After replacing the Main relay, never had the same problem ever again (knocks on wood).
Also known problem areas are the Ignitor and Coil going out and causing these very same symptoms. Especially when the motor is warm/operating temp and you go to restart the car.

Sound like the ICM, quite simple to replace. Or go to the Junk yard like others said and replace the dist. in its entirety. If you replace the Dist, take the old one apart and mess around with it, juts to get familar with it, you will find better ways to fix things in the future. Also if you have a shop manual for your car it will show you how to test the ICM for resistance...Helpful i might say.
hey guys i just put in a new distributor from auto zone and the car started up after a few tries, i again changed the plugs though because now the car shakes through first and second, first is more violent than second and the third - fifth gears are fine, when i changed the plugs the plugs were dark black, put the new ones in and the shaking is still there, through "all" the gears though the car jerks at times and when im at idle the rpms fluctuate from 1500 down to nothing, the car has died once since and it took about five tries till it started again, any ideas?????????
