Heading to VIR from North. Which way to go?
Ok so I'll be heading down to VIR Thursday. I'll be coming from Maryland. Last time I went (if I remember correctly) 81 all the way down to 220 South, then 58 East and came in West of Danville. Took around 4 1/2 - 5 hrs. Does that sound right? It was almost a year ago. (By the way if those are wrong directions please correct)
Mapquest and Yahoo want me to go want me to go 95 to Richmond and then hit 58 and come in East of Danville. Well for one I don't feel like pushing my truck 80+mph on 95 and for two is says it's a good 6.25-6.5 hrs drive. I know they are guesstimates and usually longer but a whole two hrs? Hmmmm...
Which way do most Yankee's go?

Leaving from NoVa, I always took 495-->66W-->29south. I do like the drive from I-95 (I think to I-195 to some other road to 360w) better than 29 south, but there's almost always traffic from springfield to fredericksburg unless you leave late morning.
The way you are speaking of would be: 66W----81S-----581-----220----58E
It'd be closer to 6 hours. Going 29 takes about 5.5 hours and you have to be mindful of cops. 95 is a crapshoot with traffic delays. Sometimes it's super fast, other times it sucks horribly.

If you're coming down for the THSCC thing, come find me and say hello. Great big white Excursion likely paddocked near a white CRX, a red SE-R and a blue E36 M3.

RJ is correct. I believe it should be 95S-295 toward Charlottesville-64W (for one exit)-288S-360W-58W
This avoids the toll on the Powhite Parkway.
The final segment of 288 opened in November, completing that quadrant of the circle (give or take).

That is correct... and should be a good bit faster than the old way.

From our door in South Richmond to VIR it takes 2 hours exactly. If you are coming at a non-rush hour time from Northern VA, I would think best to come I-95 to I-288 North. Then 360 West and just follow signs for South Boston/Danville. I think you may end up being on Rt 460. Lots of cops through there at times. Deadends at Rt 58 and go west. About 10 min past Bojangles will be the left turn for VIR.

You lost me. I never used the Powhite Parkway, 288 goes straight into 95. Which route number is the Powhite?
It sounds like now there are two roads in between 95 and 288.

I-195. I think its 2x$0.50 or $0.75 tolls.

Purple is the old way, with tolls on Powhite Parkway (195) to 288.
Green is the new way discussed above on the western extension of the 288 loop, and it should be faster.
Maybe I'll go drive it both ways and let ya know
Jon
Ah, I went a third way. I went through Richmond, and got directly onto 288. The new way you showed looks like more miles, no?

For what it's worth, I take Rt 29 from Gainesville down to Danville. Faster from my end of NOVA, but also a nicer and less stressful drive. I-95 is boring and the backups are too random.

Ditto that.
When I used to use 95 I went south to 85, that worked fairly well.

That is like an hour longer than using 288 to 360.

I wouldn't have thought of going so far south on I-95 to back "up" to 360, but now I understand.
Depending on time of day, I often like to avoid going through downtown Richmond (and the Powhite Parkway, especially).
It will be longer going around I-295, but it will often be faster.
BTW, Matt, I remember you complaining about Smart Tag instead of EZPass. Read here about new systems compatibility (though not for some of Powhite, yet).

Just don't have both, or you can be charged twice.
Also, visit here for some new mapping capabilities in Virginia.

not sure what problem you mean. my smart tag (dulles toll rd flava) has worked on the po white trash parkway for a long time
I guess I'll try 295 next time though.
FWIW, I usually take 95-po white-360 etc down and 29 home. Invariably, 95 from freds burg to dc is a parking lot on sunday nites

Them Northern folks like their EZPass, which they can now use in (most of) Virginia.
