Default 225/45/15 availibility...

recent i saw a thread some ppl were complaining that this size was suppose to be available but have not. i went straight to my jdm Toyo source (he manages the US op from Japan). FWIW, he told me it is on the sea and will be available in end of Feb.

Hopefully they will be.

But I've heard the "They're on the boat" thing before.
Apparently the boat I heard about was the really slow one.

exactly. I think the new hankook performance street tire has been on the boat since last summer. Must be traveling about 1 mph or so.

"Frank,

Sorry for the delay.

I don't know who is saying and who is asked....
But I can answer exactly when new products are available.

225/45R15 RA1 are on the sea will be available from the end of Feb."

it's slow and heading to china, not long beach

whether its hk z212's or GT4, i think this whole transpacific commercial transport thing needs to be revolutionized. step 1 & 2 would be "honest answers from suppliers. responsible responses from retailers"

Well, if Toyo is sending some of these tires over its a very small amount and for a select few dealers.
I sent an email to Rodney Perry of Applachian tire (the big race tire dealer in the Southeast. Hoosier and Toyo) asking him about these Toyo 225/45/15 tires that are supposed to be available within the next month.
The answer from him was...

"Scott, at this point it appears to be just a rumour, according to our Toyo
sources."

So, if these tires ARE "on the boat," how many of them are there and who is getting them. This makes 2 big east coast dealers who know nothing about them.
Something isn't right here.
Are these tires going to show up at the dealers in 2 weeks with a big red bow and a card that says "SURPRISE!!!"
???

I was notified last week that there is a limited number in the country with more on the way. This came straight from a Toyo marketing guy, so I don't know if they are PR/test samples or for dealer orders. But they do exist. Probably best to have your dealer try to order them and see what happens.

In Toyo's defense, it was never Toyo that promised them before.

I posted a while ago that the tire was indeed going to be made & that they would arrive in the first quarter of the year. I got this info from two very good sources within Toyo. While I haven't confirmed the availablility myself, if Thawley said they are here, I believe him. We have mutual friends @ Toyo. That being said, hopefully Toyo USA was able to convince Toyo Japan to produce the tires in sufficient quantity.

For our friends here in the US, it is a double edged sword. If they don't get a good supply, the public bashes them. If they get too much and/or they don't sell well, Toyo (Japan) will bash Toyo USA.

Huh?
What?

There just aren't many things in the world that are guaranteed. This is especially true when it comes to selling something new. If Toyo wants a guarantee that the tire will sell out, I'm guessing we won't see very many of them.
Really, it just doesn't work that way. Theres a thing called risk, and in business you have to take it.

And for what its worth to your friends at Toyo, when Hoosier rolled out the R3S04 225/45/15 was one of the first sizes (if not THE first). Thats pretty telling, and I dont think they have much trouble selling them.

On the upside for you Toyo fans, Spec Miata is now allowing open tire choice in many regions, and a whole bunch of them were on Hoosiers this weekend. This means that maybe for the first time in 3 or 4 years Toyo wont run out of 205/50/15 tires before June.

PS - I don't doubt that these tires exist somewhere, but as of this weekend the largest race tire dealer in the SE is still clueless about them. Maybe you guys should suggest to your friends at Toyo that they call up a few dealers and let them know the tire exists???
That might help things along a bit.

Something still seems awfully "not right" with this whole thing. I mean, how can Toyo expect to sell something that they aren't telling the dealers they are making??? Who the hell is writing that business plan?

Scott, thank you very much for stating what is for you something that is obvious. I was too. It would seem that both of us have been around long enough to understand how a business works & the law of supply & demand. I am sure we also both understand that a subsidiary doesn't always get what it wants when it wants.

Unfortunately, not everyone has the benefit of experience and/or education in these matters.

Like I said before, "I don't know if they are PR/test samples or for dealer orders. But they do exist." Just because they exist, it doesn't mean they've been "released". I checked the press releases in the "news" section on toyo.com. There's been no official announcement, yet. When the tire is released there surely will be.

In other news, I want to buy a MIG welder, but no one on the "welding/fabrication" list is helping me with my previously searched and fairly well researched question posted there https://honda-tech.com/zerothread?id=1163598. Any takers here?

And referring to:

The tire industry would certainly not be unique in behaving this way. In my travels as a photographer, I continue to see times when the Professional Services Reps at Canon are kept totally in the dark on new products until AFTER the product announcements in Japan. Just as often, there are pro photogs in the US already USING the products for evaluation and feedback. Sure, it makes Canon's reps look like liars or idiots when the word on the street gets out before they hear in from their bosses. But consider the manufacturer's point of view. Would you want your sales force selling a product that's barely in production, if at all? Or would you rather they say ignorant, and let them sell the existing products you've giant stacks of?

So, err, if I have a 15x7 +45 offset wheel on my ITR, will a 225/45 R15 tire rub much? I know no one has seen these particular Toyos yet, but I'd run them if I was pretty sure they wouldn't rub under HPDE conditions.

(If it rubs at full lock on the inside of the front wheel well, I don't care about that).

I see there's a couple of other (Kumho/Advan/Hoosier) choices in this size, but I'm happy with the Toyos.

Well, OK. I agree.
But in the context of this thread (Frank telling folks who want these tires that they will be available at the end of February according to Toyo), this is the same as them NOT BEING AVAILABLE.

In other words, it does the average joe like Zsolt no good if there are 8 tires on that boat and he can't buy any of them.
Get it?

I hear you. I was just responding to SPiFF, who was asking for an update. My hunch is that we will see our first set of these tires at the First WCHC points race at Fontana in two weeks. I'll try to get a picture if it happens.

I sure hope we don't see them. It doesn't seem fair to be racing against others who have access to Toyo tire sizes that aren't available to everyone else.

boy you guys are hard to please. if you guys wanted to know specifically how many sets are coming, i could ask... but you didn't. as for availability, i'm sure it's on a first come first basis. so if you really want it, bug/bribe/kiss *** and do whatever you need to get the job done. if you want it that bad...

as for 225 and rubbing. years ago i ran 225/50/15 yoko a008rs on old 5 spoke GSR which was 15x6 et40. it rubs only on full lock on front, and rubs rear trailing up during very hard cornering (no biggie, just polishes it ever so slightly). so with 15x7 et45 it might be ok. i think... i'd run a lower offset and roll the fender tho.
