So i just got my swap a few days ago in my hatch, with a brand new exedy clutch. Shop says to break it in for 500 miles. I got about 320 on it, 200 highway, 120 city, and im DYING to open it up.

Is it cool to take it to redline in one gear, and just put it in neutral instead of shift...just so i can get a feel...i mean ive touched vtec like twice and im going crazy... whats the deal?

Go ahead, but if you **** it up youl know why. I personaly would not do it until i had at least 400 city miles. I dont really count highway miles since you not really engaging and disengaging the clutch constantly like you are in the city

 

Did you resurface, or get a new flywheel? If so i would wait that 500 miles. And a good majority of it on the street so you get alot of stop and go.

If not then who cares because youll be changing it out anyway soon depending on how bad that flywheel is.

 

eh, when i first got my swap and new exedy clutch and findanze flywheel. I opened it up the 1st dry i hit dry surface . I mean don't get me wron i didn't slam the clutch pedal in i pushed it in easy. I mean i haven't had an problem's with it since (knock on wood) and i've had the swap since last September.

 

As much as it sucks, just wait. It will be much better to wait for another 300-350 miles of city driving and have a good clutch to last you, rather than to rip it once or twice now and have a slipping clutch, then have to replace it (spending another $200-$300), and then go through it all over again.

 

i know this sounds crazy but i put almost 1000 street miles on mine before i ripped into it. You should hold out until you get 500 on there.

 

Yes, i got my flywheel resurfaced, this is the worst! i think i mjsut gonna spend hours driving today to get those miles under my belt.

What is actually happening when you are breaking in your clutch? What does it affect, and why do you have to do it. Is it something about seating position, or something about the teeth...i just want to understand

They tell you to wait for a reason....So just wait. It's not worth the risks of ******* it up.

 

I installed my ACT xtss clutch and dyno tuned my car the next day. I put down 216whp/181wtq and I have been beating my car hard for a year. The clutch still grips like it was brand new.

 

logical answer would be to wait. but...

when I put in an exedy clutch in my ex....i was about 200 miles into it and i just said **** it and redlined it like twice that day ahah. whatever...just wait it out.

Yeah the shop says 500 but go 1000-1500 miles just to be safe

You know I had shared my experience with putting in new clutches and driving normally in another thread on here and people jumped ALL OVER ME.

Personally I think you would do much more damage if you rode/slipped the clutch than if you accelerate hard once its engaged. Friction between the clutch plate and flywheel only occurs during engagement and dis-engagement. Friction creates heat. I do not believe that break in has anything to do with running it to redline at all.

Break in with mild engagement such as stop and go city driving prior to racing or spirited driving. Do not overheat the clutch during the break in period.
