Default initial timing 91 si

hey my new daily is a 91 si, and i have to say, i love the little thing. i just did a timing belt on it, and bought the haynes for it. The manuel says to line up the single mark (not the three other) to the pointer on the plastic gaurd, and line the cam gear up, with up pointing up and the hash marks lined up with the head. now looking from the drivers wheel, with up, UP the marks will not line up perfect. i lined up the firewall side hash, and the car runs, but ideals kinda funny, is there a better explaination to this? should i have lined up the headlight side hash witht he head? anything

thanks darren

your post was kind of a hard read, its probably why you havent had many respnses yet. Im sure ssl2k and hatchbox will be on this soon.

You have to line up the timing belt crank gear hash with the line/arrow on the inner plastic cover to get the crank to TDC.

Then you have to put the cams with each has facing each other with the "up" label pointing up.

You cam timing is off, thats why its idling funny.

Also, if your head is milled excessivly this will make it ahrd to get correct timing without a set of adjustable cam gears.

Did you get the correct timing belt?

On the crank you should make sure the little line is alinged with the arrow on the block...

and with the cam, make sure the UP arrow is UP and then the 2 lines on the side are matched up with the marks on the head...

Unless you went completely crazy with the milling of a head ? I dont think you even had it off.... you are probably just not aligned correctly and are off 1 tooth.

When it is idling and you punch the gas very fast does it almost die out? or does it seem like there is a lot of noise coming out of the intake manifold?

My guess is that you're just off a tooth or it isn't the correct timing belt.

You said the car is idling funny, are there any mods done to the engine that may be effecting it in any way? No CEL's I'm guessing either?

What's up guys...

ahhh that helps alot! the manuel says to line the hash marks up with the head line which they dont, i did not know about that mark on the plastic.

btw, thanks for the input, the head did not come off and is completely stock.

one more question, the little hashes on the crank pully (three in a row and about an inch over one mark by itself) i lined up the one by itself with the pointer on the lower plastic. is this right or does it go on one of the three marks
thanks darren

The white mark by its self is the TDC mark. The other three are for ignition timing.
