Default Compression test results...

Well i got my compression test results back today, i didnt get my car back yet but he told me what they were over the phone. They averaged out to be 130...
I have read numerous threads saying that the compression is supposed to be closer to 180 isnt that correct? The guy at the dealership said that the stock #'s were supposed to be like 135 so everything is cool. I dont belive him. So i really need to know what the stock compression #'s are on a stock H22a4.
Thanks

there is no set numbers but i say thats low. it all depends on elevation etc also. the main thing is that the cylinders are no more then 10% off of eachother.

Make sure he had the throttle wide open when he was cranking the motor. Stock compression should be 185psi.

it differs. i pulled 225, i have seen an H23 pull 250. thats why the 10% rule is there.

Doesnt the JDM H22 have a higher compression than the USDM H22a4?
But as for mine i dont know, my only thought is to call another Honda dealership and see what they think the stock compression should be. Im with you guys on this, 130's sounds really low.

The Helms says STOCK compression is 185psi. JDM engine is higher. But your right, big differences is a no no, but anything lower than 185 could be signs of things going bad. I wouldnt worry if they are higher as long as they are 10-20 psi of each other. If you pull somethingl like 185 185 185 250, then you have to question it. My last compression test was 185 185 185 200. One cylinder is happier than the other...

i would wonder about that other cylinder lol. too much happy time and he may get tired

do a leakdown test next. that will tell you more then intraweb bitching about how your engine is doing.

Bahhhh, i dont get this....so the guy at the dealership lied to me or what?
What should i tell him, is there any way i could find proof of the correct stock compression #'s and show him what they are supposed to be?

This is the best i could do now, im at work and i dont have my Helms with me. But this is the same exact thing that is in it.

You can see that the minimum compression allowed is 135psi, but i wouldnt want to go near that. 185 and above is your target. The maximum veriation is 28psi. So as long as all cylinders are 28psi of each other its ok. Dont let him feed you anyother ****, tell him 185 is the stock compression and unless something is wrong with your piston rings or valves etc, then you shouldnt see anything less.

last time I checked my H22A4 (obviously USDM) I got 220 all the way across, give or take one or two PSI. Methinks your numbers are low.

About the dealership, don't waste your time/breath telling the tech he's an idiot. One time I had a dealership tech tell me its perfectly fine to run 87 octane in my motor .

You can find idiots everywhere, at any level, in any position, so don't go thinking everyone that works at a dealership is a dumbass.

Another question is did they do it right? was the engine warm, did they have the gas floored when they were cranking it? Get yourself a 20 dollar compression tester and a friend, and do it yourself for piece of mind man.

Thats the thing, when i picked it up i talked to the tech guy and he said that they did it with the engine off. I dont know how that works but here is the sheet they gave me with the results on it...

I wouldn't believe anything a dealership gives me when it comes to spending 5g's on a new engine from them, basically they think if they tell you your compression sucks your either going to buy a new motor, or rebuild it. 24 dollar compression tester dude, do it yourself, if the results suck, you know where to go... at 130 psi on your cylinders I would think your car would smoke like crazy, 135 is the service level, I'm thinking at the service level its probably burning oil noticibly (sp)

Your suppose to have the engine off when you do the compression test, you hold the gas pedal down to open the throttle body all the way. Not to "give it gas". This way air can pass the throttle body and enter the combustion chamber and give you the proper PSI. I think if you do it with the throttle close you will see crazy low numbers everytime.

Why dont you go and spend the $15 on a compression tester and perform it yourself? Its as simple as removing a spark plug, connecting the tester and cranking the engine over with the pedal down. Just remmember to remove the fuel pump fuse to the engine wont fire up. That wouldnt be good....

I mean really dude a 98 lude with 63k on it, 130 psi, either you beat the living **** out of it or someone else did..before I would buy off on either I would warm the damn car up, pull the plugs and wires off, pull the ECU or fuel fuse and hook the gauge up and have a friend sit in the car hold the gas down, and crank it 7 times per cylinder to be safe. and read the gauge. if you get 130, start heading over to Hmotorsonline.com to get a new swap, or think about a rebuild
