any autobody tech's or painters in here?
Im just wanting some thoughts and help as I am thinking of painting my car myself. I really want to learn and ive looked into classes and such ,but their isn't any near me. Ive been reading alot on how to do it and such ,but I would love to just get some input from you guys who actually do it
im going to paint my car myself; i have been doing research for a while now.
you do need some painting skills
you need a very clean place to do it, and i mean very clean.
the gun you use makes a big difference( gravity feed of course)
use poly paints.
do research and go for it.

Make sure you section off your garage so that you have no dirt or anything floating in the air
It's all in the prep work too. If you dont prep the surface good you'll end up with imperfections... Also what paint system will you be using? (single stage or base/clear)? and what brand are you looking at using?

im looking at using a 2 stage system. This just sucks as no schools near me offer any type of autobody class and no shops around me want any helpers right now because they all say their so busy right now. So all i can do is teach my damn self. So im pretty much stuck with either teach myself or pay someone a few thousand dollars to do it. I would rather just do it myself as then i feel like I would get more satisfaction outta of it

It doesnt matter what they teach you class! Its how well you do the job and the time and effort you put into the job. I used to be in this field and I did paint my own car too. It came out like a mirror finish. There's alot of tricks to and steps in a show quality paint job.. Even if it's not for show it would still be nice to have a super looking paint job even if it's a stock color...
so basically if i take my time and do it right read up alot on this stuff and get some good practice in I should be ok
You have to have good timing between each coat. Weather and paint mixture plays a big role in the outcome of your paint job. If you want detailed info just ask me. I'll help as much as I can
well i plan on getting the msds so which tell me the flash times between coats as far as tempature the garge i plan on using is going to be heated to 70 which is what i think most paints want

IMO to me Info=Knowledge=Good... But it dont mean jack if you dont have hands-on experience
a little off topic but I do know plenty of people that I talk to, talk like they know all about car stuff etc.... then i ask if they have done/tried it they say no...O K... then i ask where they get their info and they said from reading and that's what he/she said...."sometimes what's printed in ink is not accurate"
