Default Intermittent hesitation on 90 Accord EX 5 speed

This problem is bugging me to death! When I am accelerating the car will hesitate around 2500-3000 RPM. As I am holding the gas pedal down it will not do anything for a few seconds, then it will kick in. I usually have to push the gas down quite a bit to get it to go again.

This problem only happens every few days or so. It happened to me again yesterday and it seemed worse than before.

I have changed the plugs, plug wires, distibutor cap, rotor button, and fuel filter. I also installed an AEM short ram intake so I know it is not a problem with air delivery to the throttle body.

Does anyone have any suggestions? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

-How many miles on the car

How do I go about checking the O2 sensor? The car has 220K on it. I haven't had problems with gas mileage. I ran some fuel injector cleaner through it also.

Thanks for the reply.

I forgot to add, I have a 5 spd. as well, and have replaced the MAP sensor, checked the O2 sensor, checked the IAC valve, and am trying a new distributor right now. I'll keep you informed.

Thanks for the reply. I am suspecting maybe the O2 sensor, IACV, EGR valve, ignition module, or distributor. I haven't had the extra money to replace any of these parts yet, but I do have a thermostat that I will be putting in pretty soon.

These type of intermittent problems are so difficult (and expensive) to troubleshoot, especially with no CEL!

Thought I'd give you another update... Replaced the distributor and ignition coil, but those were not the problem althought I haven't adjusted the timing on the distributor yet, so that could be the cause. My O2 sensor is good, and when I unplugged my TPS and IAC valve it did not recreate the problem. I'm going to see if I can borrow a timing light from a friend to adjust the ignition timing and see if that fixes it. I'll let you know if I figure anything else out.

I have a leaky rear main seal that leaks oil on the flywheel after a few hours of driving and causes this problem. Check to see if your rear main is leaking.

Thanks for all the replys everyone! I don't think I have any oil leaks, but I will double check for the rear main seal.

Would the TPS or IAC valve cause a CEL if either were malfunctioning?

i had the exact same problem... 92 ex w/ auto trans. mine ran great cold but after an hour or so on the freeway it started acting up. no cel just hesitation when i kicked into passing gear or kicked her up above 3500 rpm. replaced the ignitor and it went away. mine would even do it just cruising down the freeway at 70-75. without mashing the accelerator. i threw money at it till i had no ideas left. 45$ ignitor fixed it so, something to think about.

I might try replacing the ignitor. That's much cheaper than replacing the complete distributor.

True.... I can't even began to imagine how much the distributor will cost, but good luck on fixing the problem!

Just want to let everyone know that I was having the same exact problem with my GSR. I ended up replacing the O2 sensor and the spark plugs last night and it runs better than ever -- fixed it right up.

Your ignition Distributer and Ignition Coil are about to go out. I had to replace both on my 93 accord. The rpm needle would just drop and all of a sudden jump back after a few seconds. Sounds like the same problem I've got 180,000 on mine. If you've never replaced it was $680 w/labor.
