Default anyone have a tundra? Tundra forums = useless

I tried to get some help on some other boards, and didn't get very much except an elevated respect for honda-tech.

Does anyone know what the TRD package is on an older Tundra?

seems like the tires are the same size, and the ones I am looking at are 2WD with an open differential. I don't see whats so TRDish about that.

would it help me w/ towing in any way?

TRD on the Tacoma (4wd or 2wd) is stiffer springs all around and better shock absorbers. Also, I believe a few items on the rear suspension attachments were tweaked a bit.

And, it included an electronic locking diff and a few other beefier items under the hood. As well as wheel/tire combo and perhaps a different final drive (TRD Tacoma gets all of this)

How this translates to a Tundra I do not know, but it might provide some insight.

looks like it gets you nitrogen charged shocks, wheels, and tires.. I found that here:

http://www.faqs.org/faqs/autos/toyota-faq/tundra/

was tundrasolutions that unhelpful? they usually had decent info when I had a tacoma..

Well, I have an 01 tundra and have LOTS of info about them.

Try this forum. It's the best tundra forum that I have found, but they changed it a bit ago so you must be a paying member to enjoy all the info.

http://www.tundrasolutions.com

Really the only difference with the TRD is that it uses different shocks, and you originally get the "off road" tires which are CRAP!

If your looking for an open dif model, then you are looking at the 00-01. Those also don't have any abs. In 02 they went with abs, and a rear lsd! Right after I bought mine!

If you are buying it to tow with, then I must let you in on something most people don't know. The pre 03's have tranny problems. The planetary gear was manufactured with the wrong tolerances and it cause the tranny to wear prematurely especially when you tow. If you get an 00-02, try to get an extended warranty.
The truck does a great job towing my CRX around. Keeping the rpm's up there is a must, but it tows like a champ. Other than the tranny issue, I have been VERY happy with my truck. Mine just clocked over 60k, and it's an 01 limited 2wd. I will be selling it with-in the next 6-8 months to buy an 05 double cab 4wd tundra!

If you have any other questions, let me know! I would be happy to answer any questions you have!

Here's my dirty truck!

Basically the difference was bilsteins and different tires.
It was an off-road package.

If you don't plan to go off road, skip it.

In addition to the grill kit (as his pic shows) there are also a bunch of other goodies you can buy from TRD - header, intake, rear sway bar. Bassani also makes a nice dual exhaust. I really love the way it sounds! I would definately recommend the truck.

See if you can find one with a tow package; not for the hitch but the extra oil cooler.

But that said, I am noticing an issue with my tranny. It does a "klunk" noise when shifting gears sometimes. (It is a '00.) I'm debating on if I should do something about it now and if there is anything that could be done relatively inexpensively or just wait till it gets bad?

Jeremy, you wont be dissapointed with the '05 double cabs! I traded in my '03 for it. I had no idea what a difference a true back seat with seperate doors make. The power is higher than previous years with added grunt down low. The final drive seems to be lower and the tendency to downshift for hills while towing is much less. The double cab accelerates quicker than my old access cab that was a few hundred pounds lighter. Whenever you want one, let me know, I got mine for a killer deal and can foward you to the right guy. Now all I need is a bed liner.

Cool. Yeah, I test drove one awhile back and REALLY liked it. I thought the extra 40hp and the new 5sp was really nice!
Having my son in the back of our tundra is getting a bit tight now, and I want to upgrade sometime in the near future. I am not in love with the new truck prices that they have though. 30-35K is a bit much especially when I can pick up an 04 with under 10k for about 25-26k.

I may wait till the 06 comes out and then pick up an 05, but we will have to see. I wont buy an 04 because I want the new motor and tranny!

my '03 slider was so stiff, it took some effort to open up since I opened it up a total of 2 times.
