Default what are the side effects of a rich air/fuel mixture at idle?

I know there are a couple of modded ecus that have a very rich air fuel mixture at idle. At the time i got my motor, i immediately used a custom ecu by a reputable mechanic in my area. I was worried whether he knew what he was doing and got the car dynoed asap. Air fuel ratio was great... the leanest it went was about 13.8 and was running from 12's to 13.8 straight thru... (by the way if you have any opinions on this curve let me know). Its a CTR motor... and the program he wrote is based on a program for his setup which is a fully built ITR motor... with compression supposedly at near 13.

I always noticed alot of black smoke at low rpms in my car... but i always thought rich was safe and the air fuel curve on the dyno was good... the guys there were actually pretty impressed by it. However my neighbour tunes different race motors... cars...bikes... boats etc... and one night i pulled in the drive way and he noticed by the smell that the car was running extremely rich at idle. By the scent he was saying that it smelt like somewhere in the 10s at idle and said its no good... id eventually kill my rings... and it would blacken my oil quickly.

From asking him questions and explaining to him that i noted online that some ecu programs entail a rich idle... he said its probably for full race setups where having it rich after a hard run would cool the car down faster..

ALl in all im just basically concerned for the motor... and want to know how much damage could have been done thus far... ive been running the ecu for about 6 months now with this rich idle...I have an afc... how far is safe to lean it out you'd think considering its running near a 10 mixture... without a dyno?(i have an autometer air/fuel gauge)... it sits on rich at idle... would leaning the idle till it switches to lean be safe? ... and what kind of damage do u guys think could have been done thus far?

thanx in advance for the help

I have the same problem where I canot pass smog either because of the A/F mixture...I need to get my motor tuned very soon as it is running rich also!!!

Running rich is better than running lean!

Think of it this way. What is gas soluable?? Oil right! Well just think of how the excess fuel is washing your cylinders clean, and thinning your oil in the pan!!! This will cause excess bearing wear, cylinder and ring wear!! I would seriously change it immediately! Just imagine sitting there at idle washing your cylinders clean and then getting on it!!! Ouch!
