Default which to buy > intake and exhaust

I have a 96 h23(im 16 with very liittle cashflow for mods). I was wondering if there is any major differences in performance gain if i were to buy a brand name CIA or just an ebay generic. or if there are major gain difference between the Short Ram intake and the CIA for ludes. As for exhaust i was thinking of going with buying a cheap exhaust setup mainly just to get the B pipe and putting the B pipe on and welding my stock mufflerback on.( this is mainly for caust reasons and im afraid of buying an aftermarket muffler and being stuck with a weedeater sound). <how much hp performance gain do u think i would lose from a set up like this. thnx.

Maybe 4-5 horsepower that way.

I would look for a cheap intake tube off of ebay,
then buy a k&n filter for it.

I would hold off on the exhaust until you have enough saved up to do the
whole exhaust system.

Id go with the AEM V2 intake, and as for exhaust, I really dont know, I would ask around and see if any one has a exhaust around your area , and listen to it

Hey man, I'm in the same boat as you, 16 with an H23 and not a whole lot of money to spend on parts.

As far as the intake goes, I had the same question, name brand or ebay with K&N. I would definately look into Apex'i, their intake fits on your stock Intake arm or a custom pipe, and check out this comparison of Apex'i against some brands including K&N: http://mkiv.com/techarticles/filters_test/2/

After seeing the filtration quality I wouldn't want a K&N filter on my car. This friday when I get paid I'm ordering an Apex'i Intake.

As far as exhaust goes, you'll hear different things from everyone, I plan on getting an RS*R at some point, but If you can't wait to save up for something like that, then get a custom exhaust made, around ~$200 depending, I think with those the only thing that sound depends on is the muffler, so find one you like.

To each his own, do what you like, just offering my plans as I'm in almost the exact situation as you. Good luck and have fun, all I can say is research, research, research.

As for intake, just get a cheap one off ebay but buy a K&N filter to go with it. You're create pretty much the same amount of hp as a name brand intake

I have an AEM short ram and a Apex'I WS catback. I love it, no ricey fart can sound whatsoever. I woud much rather have a CAI though. I had one and I sold it If you go with an Ebay CAI just make sure you get a good K&N filter.

The cat is what gonna keep you car sounding good. If you keep the cat the car wont have that buzzing sound. If you ditch the cat get big resonator.

Pretty much. Test pipes / high flow cats (except maybe some really good ones I haven't come across yet) will make that buzzing lawnmower sound.

F the World Sport....H23 + Thermal Cat back = best sound ever.

My friend has an AEM CAI and the Thermal setup and his car sounds awsome. Its not real loud until he goes WOT , but its still doesnt sound like poop.

I agree that I wouldn't recommend a custom-made kit, I'm just saying if you don't have alot of cash and it's good enough to settle for, you could do it. As I said, I'm gonna save the extra couple hundred bucks and go RS*R, I've heard nothing but good from them, and it looks badass to boot.

Well depending on your local inspection process, make sure you comply.

<TABLE WIDTH="90%" CELLSPACING=0 CELLPADDING=0 ALIGN=CENTER><TR><TD>Quote, originally posted by chandler &raquo;</TD></TR><TR><TD CLASS="quote">Id go with the AEM V2 intake, and as for exhaust, I really dont know, I would ask around and see if any one has a exhaust around your area , and listen to it</TD></TR></TABLE>

Id also recommend AEM v2 (carb exempt), but for cost issues I wouldnt recommend it.
If your so hard on cash, Why not leave the car stock until you can afford quality parts..
expecially exhausts, Muffler's arent the only aspect that affect sound, size of piping, type of bends, type of coating on metal, and cat setup. If you get custom piping made, make sure its rust proof and mandrel bent, no less than 2.5 inchs.

You really cant judge intake and exhaust mods by horsepower, your really just freeing up your engine for better response. Some cheap intake pipes dont have the proper emissions fittings, watch out for that also.

Cat size is ok stock, doesnt hurt to much. Id seriuosly get full exhaust, and not just piece it togather, that doesnt do anything for performance, maybe except header.

Baking Soda, a shitload, vacuum it later.. Febreeze it also, then get a really powerfull cover up spray.... buy a can of AXE body deoderant, spray that everytime your car smells off, give it a spray in all your vents and carpet material.

I wouldnt put any cheap modifications on a non permanent vehicle, for one, itll be almost impossible to resale it for the money invested, with quality parts, you can always un install them, sell the parts off, and then sell your car stock. We dont need any more "riced" cars these days.

Amen. That's what I have. Everyone likes the way my car sounds. FAR from ricey. Deep throaty sound.

I had it with my H23, and now with my H22.
