anyone blown a motor due to cam keys?
My b18 blew awhile back. Piston to valve. I thought it was a bad crower valvespring. Well, today while taking the gears off the cams i noticed that the exhaust cam key was all tweaked and chilling like at a 45 degree angle. So the gear wasnt centered and off by maybe 2-5 degrees. WEll it was obviuosly enough for piston/valve overlap. Im freakin pissed.
I DID NOT reuse my stock b16 keys becuase they got misplaced. (makes me a bit angry). So i went to Honda dismantling and got some used keys from them. Just one actually, the one that tweaked. I dont know if all kjeys are the same i told em b16, I dont know if they gave me the right one. At the time i thought they were all universal. AAAAAAAAGHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!
Has this hapened to anyone else?
A little 5 dollar part cost me 2000 dollars.

yea, I remember that thread. sorry to hear it was a stupid cam key. I thought that d-series and b-series crank keys (woodruf key) were the same too but they weren't. At least I dont think they were.

You know the cam key could have been sheered when the valves hit the pistons... the valve stops and the cam can't turn, and the timing belt applies more force to try to turn the cam and the key gives way before he cam, gear or timingbelt do...
just a thought.

yea, It sucks blowing a motor and it sucks even worse when you cant really figure out the culprit, but you got ideas. Just make sure you pay extra attention to details. I know ive maid dumb mistakes before. Theres nothing like cruising down the thruway, hearing a thud, then watching your crank pulley pass you on the thruway.lol I have no idea how that happened but I made sure to use a mild thread locker and a few extra ft lbs next time.

I was reading early today about a shop owner who used skunk2 cams and cam gears I believe they were stage 2 and the same thing happened to one of his customers cars and they found out that it was the woodruf keys that caused the engine to blow. he said the guy invested 8k into the engine. I guess now it's time to look closer at skunk2's cams and cam gears + woodruf keys.

Here is a funny thing!. I am currently doing an install with Sk2 Stg 2 cams and Sk2 Pro-series cam gears. I stopped the install due to the same reason. the Keys do not fit in the cam gear tight enough. The amount of key that is actually in the gear is very minimal. I am getting new keys to see if this will resolve the issue. However, It makes me think that maybe the cutout in the cam is too deep allowing the cam key to sit lower than it is suppose to. Not to mention that the gear can also deviate from side to side with the key in place. I am going to look at some Toda cam and cam gears tomorrow, since I know there is nothing wrong with that setup. I will also Mic. them to see if there is difference. I didn't like it and wasn't going finish until I feel safe about the install. No one wants to spend $ on their car only to have it blow due to some small issue like this.
Give me some feed back if anyone comes up with the same ideas or not.
