Default B16 Cam journal damage? Advice???

Okay so I finally got my Ls/Vtec turbo set up wrapped up and on the dyno... And during the initial base mapping the dizzy froze and forced my intake cam to freeze. This caused timing belt to jump around 12 teeth, and fortunately no valve damage. (happened around 3k rpm)

So my tech says there is some scaring on the cam journal and cam cap... The correct thing he recommends is scrapping the head, but I'm in a disagreement... With the extra clearance/tolerance what's the worst that can happen with a few scratches in the cam journal provided the lubercation is correct? I just don't see how if a few scratches on only one cam journal could cause any prolonged issues or failures in the valve train...

Please weigh in with your opinions and correct me if I'm wrong... I'm just curious to hear what you guys have to say...

Oh by the way the head is a B16 with OEM gsr cams...

Thanks guys,

A good machine shop MAY be able to weld in the scratches and line-bore the cam journals. Take it to them and see.

^^ that may/might be the right way to fix the head, but for the same price or less, u can find a bare head in good enough shape to swap ur internals.. but my buddy had cam journal damage on his gsr head and just grinded it down smooth to take out the sharp ridges on both the cam, cam cap and the cam journal.. ran it that way for years with no problems caused by doing so... its really up to u..

Thanks for the insight, I'm just looking for any reason why this could cause long term problems in theory?

Thanks again, and more opinions the better!

Do you have pics of the scarring? If its just some shallow scratches in the aluminum, its not a big deal. On the other hand, if the aluminum has started galling and is getting "mushed" around it could be a bit more serious and require some careful lwork.

I haven't seen it yet, but the guys at the shop are describing it as small scratches and not deep... And the only fear they had for the future is that the scaring may cause binding and I don't understand how?

So I just had them put it back together and will just see what happens...

Dyno will be tomorrow, so we will see.

Thanks.

im sorry but if you have scatches it needs to be taken care of either by a regrind or another head/ parts, if you where to run it with the scaring you would turn it into junk pretty fast.

also the small metal particle's if not cleaned out cleaned out correctly will cuase further damage.

Well I got word that the scratches were very small and the ls/vtec ended up making 335whp and 260ft/tq at 10psi... I will be waiting a couple of weeks to turn th boost up to 20 psi... Looking like 480-500 hp is possible with my set up at 18-20 psi!

Thanks for your comments guys!
