Adjusting the shifter
I'm starting to think that the forward/backward pitch of our shifter can be adjusted by manipulating the shift rod and extension rod. My shift **** has always been too far forward for my taste - it feels like I'm reaching for my cigarette lighter when I grab 5th gear. I wonder if I adjust the positioning of the extension rod where it connects behind the tranny, can I change how far forward/back my shift **** sits? If it is adjustable, does anyone have instructions on how to do it?
Integras dont' have cables, it's a solid linkage. That means that in order to bring the shifter closer to you (which I would like to do as well) you need to shorten one of the linkages. This should be doable, but probably tough, and it might be fragile if you have to cut and weld...hmm...
I seem to recall that the rubber connector on the tranny side of the shift extension bar spins freely. The bolt hole that is cut into the rubber insert is off-center. By rotating that rubber insert, can I change the position of the shift linkage (front to back), and thereby move the shift **** forward or backward?

was the shifter ever out of the car for any reason or a short shifter installed? the shifter may be installed backwards. it's happened before. I just purchased my 98 R and the DC shifter was installed backwards. turned it around and it felt like a totally different car! better yet... I've now reinstalled the stock shifter and am very happy with the smooth slick shifter as compared to the notchy DC.
After Budman finished his clutch replacement tonight, we noticed that his shift **** now sits MUCH further forward than before. His neutral now sits pretty close to where his first gear used to engage. We used to kid around that my shift **** sat further forward than his, and I had to reach forward to grab 3rd and 5th gears. Now, after re-installing his tranny, his shift **** sits further forward than mine...it moved alot. I was guessing that whatever we did to cause this change could be reversed (if we only realize what we did
). Any ideas? I'd like to move my shift **** back a bit for a more comfortable reach.

We removed the shift lever from the transaxle (removed the spring clip and punched out the cotter pin). Hypothetically speaking, just how easy is it to mistakenly install the shift rod to the transaxle upside down? Hypothetically speaking, that is.
Alrighty boys - Batoutahell & I aren't completely nutz!!! I knew that the previous owner of my R told me he tried 2 different shortened shifters, but neither worked well so he sent them back. What I didn't know was that he also had installed a B&M "Shift Stabilizer Kit".
My car's shifter has always felt notchier (which I like - reminds me of my old RX-7) and has been closer to the ebrake than the dash. Now I know why - and I'm changing my position back today ;-)
Data (measure top of ashtry to front of shiftknob@top of boot) in 3rd/N/4th:
Old: (5") (6 1/2") (7 7/8")
New: (7 1/4") (8 1/2") (10")
Now the shifter is much more comfortable and easy to reach.
HIGHLY RECOMMENDED PURCHASE!!!!! - I've got 78,000 miles & never had a problem with it.
BudMan - who thought he lost his marbles with the "off center" hole
