2003 accord brakes shudder when slowing down
hey, im posting this thread for my grandfathers 2003 accord sedan....apparently at higher speeds when braking (i.e for off ramps/stop lights) his brakes seem to shudder and shake the whole car...he is someone who takes VERY good care of his car, and does not do excesive slamming on the brakes...i figured the rotors could be warped? but how if there is no excesive braking? factory defect? anyone else expirencing this problem
Many factors. water on hot rotors will warp them. Unequal torque on lugnuts. Extreme change in temperature. Just get them resurfaced.
There is a TSB for brake shuddering on 03-04 accords. If the car is still in warranty, take it back to the dealer and have them look at it.
Warped rotors is a misnomer, it's actually uneven brake pad material deposition on the rotor. acura-tsx.com and stoptech.com have good write ups about this phenomenon.

That's bullshit. If you've never seen a warped rotor you haven't worked on many Hondas.

Hasn't looked at any Hondas.

Goddamned Honda and there warped rotors.
I had an 89 prelude for 10 yrs and 380000km. I drove that car hard and not once did I get a warpred rotor. Not once. Bastards.
You know why you get warped rotors? Marketing. Mutherf****ing marketing.
I bought a 99 Accord and got warped rotors within the first 10000km. Both front rotors warpred at about 8000km. I took the car back to the dealer and was told that warranty does not cover warped rotors. Bullshit bullshit bullshit. I jumped up and down and they offered to turn the rotors for free. Lucky me huh? the fact that they turned the rotors however virtually gauranteed that I would need new rotors at the the next major brake service. ********.
Here is why it happens. The bean counters at Honda sat down and decided how they could make more money. They do it by using cheaper steel than they previously used in their earlier models. They save money on the steel and this increases the profit on the sale of each car. Since they use cheaper steel the rotors wear and WARP sooner and they get more service dollars from you all without the use of any warranty.
I have about 260000km on my Accord now and have gone through no less than 6 rotors. Yes I wrote 6. Goddamn it. Honda denies all of this of course and they will continue do so as long as the service dollars keep rolling in.
If you don't believe me then look up the word NAIVE in the F***ing dictionary.

The warped rotors may be caused by the rear brake pads binding in the caliper.
I have a 99 ex with rear disks and my rear pads were jamming up in the caliper causing the rear bakes to drag BADLY, could barely turn the wheels when I jacked the car up. Second time this has happened - first time dealer fixed.
Here is the problem and increadably simple fix. Took the brakes apart and had to beat the pads out of the caliper with a hammer ( not kidding). Turns out that the channel in the caliper builds up rust. The pads slide in a stainless clip which sits in this channel and hides the rust under it. Take a dremel tool or something and clean the channel down to bare metal - apply some moly in the channel and replace the stainless clip - reassemble.
Probably something that needs to be done once a year or so.
I looked to me as though the tolerance between the pad and caliper maybe a little tight, so that any buildup of rust in that channel will cause the brakes to bind causing excessive heating of the rotors which can cause them to warp.
Cheers

I've seen both things happening at different times. Can't say it's always one thing or the other for any car, any time, sight unseen. A dial indicator will usually tell the truth...
