Default price to pay for brake master cylinder replacement?

i just picked up a 92 prelude si and it had no brake pedal pressure at all. i would have to pump the brakes a lot just to get it to start braking. the owner told me its the brake master cylinder and he had quotes of about $120 or so to fix it in the sacramento area. so i basically drove the car back down to the bay area and garaged it til i sold my other car so i can switch insurance. anyways, when i drove the car back i didnt tried to use the brakes as little as possible, and the cylinder was full when i parked it. but as the owner said, the fluid leaked out over time as it sat parked. so it needs to be replaced correct? 2 shops in my area quoted me roughly 200-240 parts/labor installed. is that too much?

I have a brake master cylinder/booster for you in the Sacramento area. If you want to come down and pick it up it's $50. Or, if I'm home when you come down, $100 installed. PM if interested, or, (916) 521-5663 Serge.

id say buy the one he is selling, because it comes with the booster also, the master cylinder is pretty straight forward, I would replace the booster because the brake fluid will corrode the rubber liner inside the booster and it will eventually develop a leak, just take the lines loose from the old master cylinder remove it and then go remove the booster from the back of the pedals, thats the hard part, just make sure you have plenty of brake fluid handy when it comes time to bleed the system have fun

that sounds like a great price but this car really isnt super safe to drive far distances and i dont want to risk it. i actually bought the car from sac and drove it back to the bay driving slow/ no tailgating/ with minimal use of brakes.

Stop taking risks man, pick up that booster from Serge. That way you get a complete unit, and save some $. I'll vouch for him, I picked up some parts from him a month ago.

? i meant that i bought the car from sac, and drove it back to the bay. ive only driven the car that 1 time just to get it home. and i dont want to risk driving the car back up there for him to install it. is a booster a lot more expensive at a shop? serge are your parts oem? what car? mileage? thanks

The drive back to the bay was pretty risky man. I'm glad you're not currently driving it. Anyways, all I know about the master cylinder is it's straight off of a 4th gen, I almost bought it, but he wasn't sure model it was off (S, SI, or vtec). I now have vtec front rotors/calipers along w/ a 5lug swap (thanks to Serge) and wanted to get the proportioning valve to work accordingly.

They're the same for S's and Si's, but the vtec has a different proportioning valve in the master cylinder to balance out the braking differently because it has larger front rotors. I'm not sure if the booster is any different or not (I think it's the same).
