Default Setting Timing Belt Tension

Just wanted to poll you guys and girls and see how everyone is setting the tension on their timing belts? In particular the B-series?

Set the No. 1 piston at TDC .
Rotate the crankshaft 5-6 revolutions to set the belt.
Set the No. 1 piston at TDC .
Loosen the adjusting bolt 1/2 turn (180°) only.
Rotate the crankshaft counterclockwise 3 teeth on the camshaft pulley.
Tighten the adjusting bolt.
After adjusting, retorque the crankshaft pulley bolt to 130 ft. lbs

thats from alldata

Thats fine with stock head gasket and head, but mill the head and/or run a thinner head gasket, and 3 teeth will leave the belt loose.

But again, HOW TIGHT do you go? How do you measure the tension in the belt, once you have tightened the tensioner? Do you measure deflection of belt on long side between crank and exhaust cam? Or what?

im sure this isnt the most accurate test, but i have always just held the belt between my thumb and index finger and turned it 45 degrees if you cant do that its too tight, if it goes farther its too loose

sorry to bring this from the dead.<TABLE WIDTH="90%" CELLSPACING=0 CELLPADDING=0 ALIGN=CENTER><TR><TD>Quote, originally posted by 96MidoriHatch &raquo;</TD></TR><TR><TD CLASS="quote">im sure this isnt the most accurate test, but i have always just held the belt between my thumb and index finger and turned it 45 degrees if you cant do that its too tight, if it goes farther its too loose</TD></TR></TABLE>

is that a good way to test how tight the belt should be? I have gotten the belt on the intake take side pretty tight and on top of both cam gears, but the belt that is on the exhaust cam seem to wobble alot at idle. My question is the belt suppose to look like it's always tight at different rpm. I don't want my cam gear to jump a tooth.

if it wobbles at idle you will want to snug it up a little. I use a screwdriver and pry up on the tensioner a slight amount when I do mine.

What would make the timing belt skip a tooth on the cam gear? timing belt being to loose at idle or at high rpm?

cool that's what i though. I'm going to see if i can tighten it a bit more. Now if it's too tight would i nap the belt at 8600 rpm? i plan and going to the drag strip soon.
