a/f guage full rich, black smoke at idle? HELP
95 with h22 swap, I had to pull the ecu because I had some water in my floorboard, the ecu did not get wet, as it was running fine when I pulled it all out, now that I put it back in, my a/f gauge is all the way to rich, and my car is idling strange with black smoke just puffing out..anyone have any ideas? wtf did I do?
anyone? I can tell from the ecu it looks like someone had a VAFC hooked up and then took it out, would any of these wires if they came loose cause this? visually they all look connected still but doesn't mean the wire caps are holding good etc. I have no idea where to start

that sounds like the map sensor from what its doing.....
check the ecu wiring where he connected the map wire back together, i believe its on the smallest plug in there....i cant remember the wire color though....

some people are saying its normal because its relearning but I'm having doubts, I shut the car off, then started it back up and it did it again....pushed it out of the garage, came back an hour later started it up and didn't notice it as much, I'm lost.
throttle signal, pressure signal, and VTM are the only ones that I think would do something pertaining to the vafc.
my white 02 signal wire is spliced for my a/f gauge and that looks a little weak sauce as far as connections go, but I would think if its not getting to the ecu after the splice the CEL would come on
keeping in mind this thing ran perfect before I pulled this out and had to crawl around in there to fix a leak by the sunroof drain.

hmm map sensor....is that called something else? as I stated in the above reply, the APEX site only shows these four wires needing to be hooked up besides the vtec wires.
MAP sensor is the most important wire for the VAFC, without it wired in it would not be able to 'control' fueling. Double check the MAP sensor wire. Although I would expect a CEL for the MAP sensor if the wire was disconnected/damaged.
It is normal for a car to run rich under high load (open loop) during the first 10-15 minutes after an ECU reset. It is not normal for a car to smoke at idle after an ECU reset.

can you tell me what wire that is? because as I said before the previous owner had removed it, and I don't know much about ecu wiring. Again I appreciate your help, h-t wouldn't be what it is, without a great bunch of guys like yourself.
GREAT, looks like the blue white wire...I will check that one when I get home. maybe you are right, without that hooked up the car is dumping fuel. what about the a/f white 02 sensor wire, my a/f gauge is splice on to that, would that cause this? My only other problem with this whole setup is there are no CEL's I would figure that if something wasn't plugged in good it would throw up a light
If your wiring for the a/f gauge is damaged at the sensor signal wire, it would cause this to happen, as well. Check ALL of your custom wiring and the wiring repairs made after the VAFC removal.
I spent the better part of 6 hours upside down pulling each and every wire apart, cutting, resplicing, soldering and heat shrinking every wire that had been touched due to the VAFC previously installed by the past owner, I reset the ECU by the helms manual, and I must say the car is running beautifully. This was the single worst part of working on my car that I have ever done, a true pain in the ***, but wellllll worth it in the end...thanks for the help guys. Also, have they made like a VAFC harness for our car, like to where you can put it inline with ecu and factory, and splice on the middle harness? That would be awesome, as I would eventually like to get some cams and gears, and tune the car a bit, but I will NOT splice the factory harness!
