I recently acquired an HKS oil pressure and a oil temp gauge. The oil temp gauge can also be used as a water temp. gauge and it seems alot easier to install that way. To install the oil temp I would have to drill and tap my oil pan and that seems like a hassle. My question is are the benefits of having an oil temp gauge over a water temp gauge really that much? any other ways of installing the oil temp gauge properly without drilling the pan? I plan on installing these gauges on my ITR street/track car TIA-Gil

 

drill and tap you drain plug, it is a pice of cake, and oil temp is much more improtant then water temp.

 

Yeah, I just tapped the plug. Just make sure that you tap it with the right threads. Some of those japanese brands use BSPT threading.... My Defi one did. McMaster Carr sells the tap you need. Its about $15.
When you stick it in a lathe chuck or whatever you use to tap it... make sure you put a nut over the drain bolt. You will trash the threads on it if you clamp the bolt itself.

 

Use the temperature gauge for oil. There's no need for another water temp gauge... the stock one honestly works great (the ricers only trash on it because they want a reason to replace it with bling).

 

I got around tapping my oil pan because I picked up a Moroso oil pan that come pre tapped from Moroso for the oil temp probe on the back side and on the front for the turbo return line. I an not sure you would want to spend the money on a Moroso pan or if it goes with your application but if you wanted to you could always look into that.

I just recently had a bung welded onto my oil pan for my oil temp gage. I am very happy with ow it came out. Other then then taking the time to pull the pan and find a bung for the sensor, it cost about $20 to have a machine shop weld it very nicely. Worth it in my opinion.

mine is similar to that, but I had it welded under one of the baffles to insure it would always be in oil. I will post pics when I finish putting th car back together this week.
