Does head size change much after age 16
I want to buy a good SA snell helmet once I start auto crossing and running the once a month or quarterly events that I can at Laguna Seca, Willow Springs, Buttonwillow, and Thunder hill in CA. But I'm sort of debating if I get a helmet once my head size changes I'll need to buy a larger size afterward? Should I buy a size bigger?

What the hell is happening in here? I come in here for my daily entertainment, but this is reDICKulous
PS, I'm with Scott, where's the hot class on class action?

Depends how excited she gets you. Usually head size changes in response to some hot class on class action ( like: "ooooh, a Street Mod Yogo vs. a C Prepared Mustang, aaaaahhhh, aaaaaahhhh, aaaahhhh, hot!")

Alan, that reply has got to be the strangest one I've ever read from you..

<gets in the spirit>I would have thought you would rather see some Superstock & Novice Ladies pairings (or maybe D Stock Ladies).. but hey, different strokes for different folks </gets in the spirit>
Ugh.. maybe I should have been more PC..
I'm not 100% sure about the age 16 thing, though.. I grew quite a bit taller between when I started driving and graduated high school.. I wasn't tracking the cranial volume, though, so I'm not sure about that aspect.. If nobody chimes in here with 15-18 helmet owning experiences, you could always check with a doctor (seriously).. he might have a better off-hand knowledge of when human skulls typically stop expanding..

In all seriousness, I wouldn't worry about it too much. Even if you do outgrow the helmet, you're unlikely to do so in the next few years - and by the time you're 20ish, you'll probably want a new helmet anyways. All this assumes you've already had a few growth spurts - I know there are the occasional freak who doubles in size while in college.
Also, don't forget that helmets are somewhat of a wear item--the glues that hold them together break down over time, the padding get flattened, thing wear, etc. I'd say buy a properly fitting helmet now. In a few years, it will be time to buy a new one anyway.
For most HPDEs and classes of racing you need to replace the helmet due to newer standards and requirements... So if your head changes size I bet you will have to get a new one anyway
The Serious Answer...
Helmet fitment is hugely important. If you plan to compete *now*, get a helmet that fits *now*. If you have to buy a new one in a couple of years because your melon grows... Oh well.
The Usual Answer...
My head size changed this morning. But it could just be all that cough medicine I drank.

And here comes the big plug: We have a big story on helmets in our next issue. Is that good timing or what? The story reminded me that I should go shopping soon, too.
I had a fat Irish head when I was 16 and I still have a fat Irish head at age 21. I've only had the same helmet since I was 19, and it still fits the same, so that obviously doesn't help with your question. Sorry.
What if you have been smelling exhaust in your race car for too long, thus getting stupider resulting in your head shrinking?

I'm 21 now and have been using the same helmet since 1997. Still fits like a glove. I intend to replace it this year only because it is an M95, so it will be out of date soon. Going to wait for the SA2005 models to become available late this year.
Think of it this way: If your head gets bigger, chances are the helmet's foam will wear and flatten at about the same rate, so it'll just self-clearance and work itself out!
Considering the jump from L to XL when I was trying on helmets felt enormous, as important as helmet sizing is, it seems like there's enough leeway to accomodate for small changes in noggin volume over time.
