Ethyl alcohol + gas = hurt engine?

the ethyl alcohol has less kenetic energy, so you get a little less bang, but, on the other hand, that's the standard winter blend has roughly that amount of alcohol, so I wouldn't worry about it.

From what I know back in college student project, E85 (85% ethanol) gas and below will not hurt an engine as the ECU and fuel map will compensate for that. It gives similar effect as you drive through area with more/less air density. Think about the same injection of fuel you get some air instead of gas in there.
It is good for leaning things out, burn hotter (thus winter gas) and be able to pass emission better. The problem with this, is the possible water content that can cause problem, higher cost, and the long term effect on ruining the rubber seals everywhere. You also get lower mpg
Make sure you get 100% alcohol, 95% and lower has too much h20 and is not good enough.
